okay, camera slack beforehand, but now... i have dremeled out the stock molded tweeter pod from the sail, mounted the polk tweeter cups in place, and also removed the third mounting tab, that isnt needed anyhow...

then, i sanded the entire assembly with 400 grit paper, just to scuf it all. i then smeared bondo on it, and let it dry, fine sanded it back down, and WA-LA, molded tweeter pod.

i'll do the other, and get them painted and installed...stay tuned.

Looks great. I got lucky when I installed my Cantons, compared to the work you're doing. I simply dremeled out a hole through the stock sail, and fit the stock Canton flush-mount tweeter in the hole. The trim texture of the mount kit was identical as was its color, so it looks stock. I'd recommend anybody trying to do sill tweeters (which is a great place for them on this car) to get blanks as suggested, and try to flush them in first before doing fiberglass work. You may just get lucky!

i didn't want to have to buy plain sails, and the cup looked like it would directly replace the stock molded piece, and with a litte sanding and a bit of bondo, it's pretty frickin prfect as far as i'm concerned.

I think new sails are like $20-25 each. Not worth the price...you can always get them later via salvage yards or just leave the tweeters in the car when you sell it (a decent set of tweeters can be had for less than $40-50 anyway).

right
you cannot buy the tweeter "sails" without buying it complete with the tweeter itself

We aren't talking about buying tweeter sails without the tweeters. We're talking about buying blank sails. I did it for my 2004. A hell of a lot easier starting with a blank slate instead of first removing the factory tweeter cup and then fitting in the new one. Plus you get to keep the factory tweeter/sail combo to throw back in when you sell the car later.

**** thats brilliant...

I've been wondering how I'm going to get my Seas neo's in there...

Anyone know the part numbers???

I love you guys.

From one Custom Fabber' to another..Nice job there.
I did that to a set of stock P5 sails last year for a guy. They turned out nice.

Your Glovebox project looked good as well.
Keep it up!

uhh yes, its easier
but the s*** just ends up mount flat instead of at an angle, plus the s*** sticks out unlike using the factory s***!

thank for the compliments. didn't mean to start a debate. i simply didn't see a need to buy anything. i don't plan on getting rid of this car, so i'm not concerned about replacing the sail panels. for someone else, that would be a viable option.

next project: tv replacing ashtray and cig lighter.

i will also update here once these get pnted this week, and when they get re-installed.

Why? Starting with a blank slate, you can cut whatever size, shape hole you want and mount the cups at whatever angle you want. My tweeters ended up semi-recessed (there wasn't enough room to go all the way recessed) angled at the opposite head rest. Looked good too. Don't forget that the back of the blank sail is clear as well, so whatever cutting you have to do to fit your tweeters in is that much easier to do.
Why the language, or do you think talking trash somehow makes your point more valid?

Thread from the dead I know, but does anyone know where to get these blank plates from ? If I get them from the dealer what part numbers am I looking for ?

Cool, looks nice already.
For about $20 you could have ordered new blank sails from your dealer and kept the factory ones in one piece if you ever get rid of the car. A lot less work that way too.

I got quoted WAY more than that. forget the exact amount but 50+ each

CANTONS!!!! I haven't heard them in about 10 years...I absolutely LOVED them....Can't really find them up here in Canada unless you do some real searching. Which usually costs alot more money. For now I will stick with my Alpine Type R's.. But when I install the components in my doors & sails, I will DEFINATELY reference thes posts...Great work guys...I really appreciate all the input everybody puts into these posts. My car would be a giant pile of crap without you!!!!

My panels came in yesterday, perfect match just no tweeter cut-out molded in. very nice. Still have to snap a couple of pics. What would you guys use to cut the hole in the panel ? I want a good clean cut.

I find that a dremel with one of those cutting tools that looks for all the world like a messed up drill bit works great for this stuff.

So as promised here are the pictures of the blank sail panel, and the inside of the stock one for comparison. You can see one of tweeter brackets that came with my speakers, but it wont work, there is a plastic clip for the rearview mirrors that is in the way, so i'm working on plan b. I cut out the tab in the middle, and moved it over last night. That looks like it's going to work, but I didnt get finished, so will work on it some more tonight.

A good hole saw the right size. You can always run the hole saw in reverse to cut down on the high cut of them. Like when you use hole saws on carpeted speaker boxes, you run em backwards to cut through the carpet, then once you do, you go in the regular direction through the wood.
