and noticed for the second time in as many days, a pinging sound. Three pings from under the hood and 1 ping from the exhaust end. Then it would repeat itself. I sat there and waited for 5 mins and it keeped doing it. Just to give you an idea, its 55+ degrees outside, rainy, car not driven hard, and the turbo cooled (I live on the bottom of a hill so by the time I coast down the hill and then down the driveway, and then finally put the car in park, it gets around 1 and half minutes of cool down daily). Anyways, has anyone else noticed this pinging? If so, what is the answer? If not, what could be the problem?

Just metallic parts contracting (I.E. catalytic converter) as they cool. The exhaust manifold may be another culprit. I wouldn't sweat it.

i turned mine off tonight and i swore i could here what sounded like it could have been the turbo spinning to a stop. it was very suttle and had to get close to here it. isd this what it is? if so is it normal? and if not what is it?

I've heard that on the diesel Excursion we have at work. It's pretty cool. I'd say it's normal; it's not like the turbo will stop spinning the exact moment the engine stops spinning.

thanks kcbhiw, I figured it was the engine cooling, but I guess I am a little parniod.

Yeah not to worry, my car does it to, my old car did it, my Moms car does it, my Dads car does it, my.......well you get the point.

Yep, some pinging is normal, always good to check for fluid leaks etc. but you're probably hearing the various metallic bits returning to a cooler, contracted state. The spooling-down of the turbo is normal as well, though you want to be good and sure you've cooled the car off after a hard run (or long highway blast) by idling or really taking it easy for 1-3 MINUTES before shutdown - typically longer than you think, though I do the same thing (off-throttling it down the hill by the house for 30 sec, then idling 30 sec, but taking it easy that last mile). The neighbors also appreciate taking it a little easier around the house anyways....

yeah the pinging sound is normal...if u start hearing a creaking sound u're in trouble hehe. hearing the turbo spin to a stop is pretty cool too. oh yeah, sometimes after i drive i stick my head under the car (it's so freaking high still !) and listen to the drops of oil that hit the bottom that cool off parts of the engine. pretty interesting
