09 MS3
hello, im new on this forum and i just bought an 09 speed3. the car is about a week old now and i ordered a cobb sri and a turbosmart hybrid bov/bpv. I know there are ALOT of post about it and some i seem to read about are good, others seem not so good so i want to cut straight to the point. The car is BRAND NEW and now im having second thoughts on modding it this early. Do you think its a bad idea i mean i read that its not so healthy for the car ( at least in VTA or 50/50) but i would really just like some personal input or if you yourself have done this in a very early stage of getting your MS3 and if you have any tips for me.

thanks, Ryan

Ha welcome!
I have had 3 valves. Greddy RS, Forge, and now a turbosmart hybrid bov/bpv. I also had a dashhawk and took readings with the TS and the forge. The Turbosmart only held the peak boost on full recirculating. The forge held it too but i HATED the sound. The TS valve had leak even on 50/50 and it did not peak right.

Sure a VTA sounds good, but so do first place. Stick to recirculating.

I would return the BOV because Street unit is comming out with a straight BPV that you can adjust the spring by twisting the top cap, just like the hybrid. And it only cost 160$ Save the 180$ and get the BOV..

BTW you still get tha BOV sound in full recuculating with the turbosmart.

Nope i dont know, but the things that i have preordered before from SU it was about 3-5 weeks. I think it would be worth the wait. And make sure to get the 2 springs for and extra $4 if you plan to mode your car.

i was looking at the bpv also....i'm hoping there won't be any kinda clearance issues or anything.

I would bet money that they have no problem clearing everything. There hybrid valve was designed by Su just for the speed3 and this is the same.

Respectfully disagree. My turbosmart peaks at 16 - 17 and holds steady at 15.5 psi in any pull in any gear, and that's in hybrid (properly adjusted). It's a beautiful, high quality piece, with SU's finishing cap. Couldn't recommend it more as the all-purpose, adaptive BOV/BPV solution.

Yes, it holds boost very well. That is good. And the craftsmanship and quality are very high. How about AFR's? Any redirection of pressure to vent after the MAF has read the air charge will increase the already over rich mixture being injected into the combustion chamber, would it not? That would be bad and power-robbing. Wouldn't the injector squirt the fuel to match the ECU's mistaken belief that all the air charge is being received, when some of it was vented to air?

Theoretically, yes. But with a proper tune of the Turbosmart this issue is moot in street performance in the hybrid setting. And if you're really concerned, using the recirc plate totally eliminates the issue and retains that BOV sound. That's the beauty of this valve, it can be customized to the user's liking in the desired application, and for virtually any tune.

i got the actual turbosmart from SU not their edition so im not sure if they tune those since they are not their own but does anyone know the right tune for the turbosmart? ill have a cobb sri as the only editional modification if it matters any to the tune

Check the how to section on how to set it up. It should be the same, when i called su they said the only differnce is the shape.

I messed with my SU turbosmart valve on 50/50 and it would not hold my peek boost of 19psi. I would ask the question of what is the benifit of running it that way?
Our cars are made to recurculate. I only bring this up because i read an article about this is. At higher RMP the boost would drop faster when full recurulating.

Careful with that Cobb. It shredded DaleNixon's trims; and HKS intake has since resolved the problem.

get a ms intake w an air straightener. my fuel trims are only off by 7%. which is pretty average among ltft's and intake systems.

I already ordered the Cobb. Is it effect it that bad?

Not necessarily. I've just seen one firsthand that was not up to scratch. No reason to cancel, I don't think, just keep an eye on your trims for issues.

Actually as long as you maintain proper AFR, trims aren't that big of a deal, but when your ECU is correcting by a factor of 24%, and 25 to 30% is the upper limit, it gets a bit scary.

Well I mean I'm not trying to mess anything up on this new car. Does anyone have a problem with the intake
