Turbo timer run time?

30 sex works for me ;) Would kick ass if they made a remote start built into a turbo timer, especially for winter months

i run my tt 30 seconds maybe a minute at maximum if i really kick its ass before i stop but i never do that so id say 30 sec. i usually take it easy a while before i know im going to be stopping to avoid and extremely hot shut offs to really eliminate the need to even run it but i let it run for 10 sec as i leave the car and walk away because everyone always goes "arent ou going to shut off yo.....what the heck?! hoed you do that?!" its funnier that way. haha.

this is a direct quote from a 2007 mazda3 owner's manual (im sure it's the same for the 08's and 08.5's as well). it's in the driving tips section

"after driving at freeway speeds or up a long hill, idle the engine at least 30 seconds to cool the turbo before turning off the engine. avoid simply hutting the engine off abruptly after a hard or long drive. damage to the turbocharger may result"

quick question off topic...does anyone even read their owner's manual anymore?

i read mine front to back and i remember this statement

it says to let the engine sit and run for a little bit in the owner's manual, maybe mazda knows what they're doing when they take the time to write that stuff in the book

ya, they know what they're doing, but i can't help but think that they are a bit more cautious with what they outline in their manuals. you know, to avoid lawsuits and stuff.

Yeah well i guess gas prices don`t bother you guys too much then ,since you are idling your Turbo engines for 30sec everytime you turn off the ignition, which is probably on average 4 times a day=2 minutes.Listen whilst triying to prolong the life of the 1000usd turbo you are waisting 3usd of gas a day 90 usd a month 1080 a year, not to mention wear and tare on the engine components and cooling system,so screw the turbo, you can buy a new one for god sakes that is if you break it after the 3yr 36k miles factory warranty heheheh:-)If you break it before 36k,they will gladly replace the whole thing.

The truth is you like gadgets and cool looking electronics in your car that glow in the dark and you want to pose with it:-)

was that supposed to mean that sitting at idle is a waste of gas? if that's what you were saying then you're wrong about it wasting $3 a day. if these cars used up a little less than a gallon of fuel a day from sitting at idle for 30 seconds at a time then no one would have this car. i don't even think a 5 second 1/4 mile drag car wastes that much at idle

What size injectors are you running that you burn 3 gallons of gal a day?

I believe that you are just "A LITTLE" off with your estimate of 2 minutes a day of idling is 3 dollars in gas. At this rate, with 5 dollars a gallon you should go through your full tank in about 47 minutes of idle...(jerkit)
also there is nothing wrong with enjoying an extra gadget in the car.

OK 3usd is about 68% of a gallon for a start 93octane fuel costs 4.39 here in FL so not quite a gallon but kind of yeah :-)
Well good luck with your turbo timers anyway.

my turbo timer also puts out a rough approximation of a/f mix. actually its surprisingly accurate. i wouldnt use it for tuning if you can get a product that can tell turbo time your car to save your engine and give you some rough but close a/f mix ratio.....sounds good to me. and i dont like posing in front of my car, i have it pose in front of me. its much better looking.

Might not be able to find a TT with remote start, but many remote start systems will have a TT function. My MSP has some cheap security system installed that has both remote start and a TT.

Also, $3 in gas for 2 minutes of idling... riiiiiiight. Let's do some math.... I get about 30mpg mixed, but let's say that's my highway milage. So at 60mph (1 mile/minute) I'm burning through 1 gallon every 30 minutes. Even if I say gas is $6/gallon, that's only $0.20/minute..... which is only a small fraction of the $1.50/minute you suggested for idling. The actual figure for idling an engine has to be only a small fraction of that $0.20/minute I use at freeway speed. Even if I say that my car consumes 10% of the fuel at idle that it does on the freeway (undoubtedly an overestimation), that's still only $0.02/minute with all estimates made on the high side.

Has anyone with a full auto timer bothered to watch how long the timer runs in auto mode after various driving styles? Would be interesting to see if the auto algorithms agree with our "no effing clue" and "this sounds good" methods.

I've had the turbo timer set to 20 seconds on my eclipse turbo for the past 150,000 miles and the turbo still has NO shaft play or binding. Why waste gas setting it to run forever... synthetic oil doesn't coke as easily as the old conventional oils used to. Running good oil and doing oil changes on time will help the life of the turbo more than a super long cool down.

Just read the post before mine.... and I think that greddy may have used that exact logic in programming their full auto TT. I've had it set itself for 9 minutes after a 2 hour long 60mph off boost drive... but only set itself to 45 seconds after a 5 minute on and off WOT freeway run. Made no sense to me, so I stuck it on manual mode. POS.

If your really worried about temps here's something else you can do to ease you mind. I do it all the time with my Diesel truck. Of course when you load the motor it's going to build heat. So if you have some speed built up in the car and can plan your stop, just down shift through the gears to cool the turbo off as you coast into your driveway or parking spot.

The minute you lift the pedal it cuts fuel flow. The motor still pumps air through the system, carrying away heat from the turbo and out the tail pipe. I've watched my temps drop 400 degrees coming to a stop in my truck by just down shifting with my foot off of the pedal.

All this is, is just one more thing you can do to wick away heat from your motor. It works, I do it everyday.
