Turbo stopped working

What's up guys,

I've had the car for 2 years now with 42k miles on the odo. The turbo started smoking lightly a year ago and recently it started smoking heavily. Took it to the dealer twice and they could not locate the problem.

I took my car to get an oil change over the weekend, and as I was driving home my car started smoking A LOT. Since service departments don't open late on weekends, I decided to just drive it and make an appointment Monday (today). I tried going from middle throttle to semi full throttle to speed up. After 3k RPM, the car just totally loses power/throttle followed by jerk and bops (boom05) no spool what so ever

So at this point I decided to just take the car to the dealership and leave it there and stop driving.

I haven't heard back from the dealership but it is being looked at by Mazda.

If this turbo problem is not covered by warranty... I was thinking of going with a different turbo.... any suggestions?

I have CPE full cat back, CPE CAI, SU boost pipes, SU R engine mounts. I've always changed my oil @ 3k miles with full synthetic 5w30.

So I just called my dealership and they said the car is running fine. They could not duplicate both problems: smoking turbo and my car running rough with no spool. Apparently it is running well. They said that it can be becasue I put in bad gas.....really really bad gas. If that is the case... DO NOT go to the Exxon/Mobile gas station on Horace Harding and Willis ave. They have some crap gas.

As for my smokey turbo, i'm going to go get my second opionion from another dealership in a week or so.

Thanks for reading!

sounds fishy to me, but I guess bad gas could be the cause? If it were I would imagine theres alot of people around you breaking down

Now you know to NEVER go back to that dealership. Shop around, find a decent one. It's a shame that >95% of dealer service departments are suck a bunch of ****** crooks. Now I have to drive over an hour to a Mazda dealer cuz the one that's close is a bunch of worthless pricks. Yeah Sesi Mazda in Ypsilanti, I'm talking to you.

I got bad gas once....that's the last time I eat my wife's chili casarole

But really, plenty of guys here swear by using 5w40 when they start seeing smoke out of the exhaust. Not saying that will fix your driveability but they say it stops the smoking

I picked up the car last night and it drives fine but I still notice smoke. I have no idea wtf the service guy was smoking. Nice guy and all but the smoke is SO damn obvious. I'm going to take a day off so I can be at the dealership and SHOW it to the service advisor.

My co-worker of mine has the 2008.5 version and is smoking too. He took it Bright Bay Mazda out in Suffolk and they installed a new turbo for him...the latest one. This will be my next place. I'll keep you guys posted.

so...any updates?

My co-worker has no smoke......so far. He has MS cat back, K&N CAI. I made an appointment next weds for them to take a look at and possibly have a new turbo installed.

I filed a complaint with BBB for the bad gas @ that particular gas station. That'll teach them to take good care of their tank.

So far my car is running strong minus the smoke. I'm in NY and the temperate dropped to 50's and now it is smoking less (compared to hot summer days).

Hopefully the smoke problem will go away so I can sell this car

Okay for some update.

I took the car to Bright Bay Mazda and they approved my warranty work. They are in the process of ordering me a new turbo. From the looks of other members, this new turbo doesn't smoke. Let's hope so.

I'm just surprised they approved it with the mods that I have. I did however have record of all of my maintanance.

I had my turbo replaced at 11K miles. The turbo was leaking oil and smoking. The work was done by Smithaven Mazda in Saint James(Suffolk County) under warranty.

no spool what so ever

I'm just as confused reading this as you seem to be writing it. Sounds like a whole lot of assumptions going on here, and no legitimate troubleshooting, potentially at the expense of a perfectly good gas station.

karlitos and boosted1 - do you guys have modded exhaust? i've seen it suggested that exhaust mods are to blame for smoking turbos. i've been asking about any stories of smoking turbo i hear, seeing if there is a correlation. so far two smoking turbos replaced under warranty locally were on cars with cat deletes... can't say that's scientific, but it is suggestive. any thoughts?

Poor design is to blame for smoking turbos. My car (and many others) smoked when they were 100% stock, no mods of any sort.

It's really not the K04, it's the high crankcase pressures and the poorly designed positive crankcase ventillation (PCV) system.

I agree with ya there- it seems from my reading that the K04 is a pretty common turbo. I just don't think the car itself was built around it properly, hence all these problems going back all the way to 2007 with the MS6.

Based on all that I have read this statement is right on the money. So what do you think the chances are that a newly replaced turbo would smoke again?? The turbo has been revised (I hear) but has the PCV design?

Exhaust mods do not account for a design flaw. Smoke comes sooner the more free flowing the exhaust is but it does not cause the smoke. Just speeds up the process.
