Turbo Info and my dads crazy idea

Let me just say first that i'm am still in the info gathering stage before you lay into me with sword and dagger. Also my dad knows more about any kind of engine than i could ever hope to know so please dont insult my father he's in his 50's and if he's got the wrong idea about any of this turbo stuff just plz politely tell me and i'll move on to a new plan of action.

ok now for the info, my dad fixes broken machines for a living and when his last job closed he acquired a turbo. Its a garret turbo but the problem is it went on a 4 cylinder diesel john deer tractor. so now i have this turbo sitting in my garage and my dad thinks we may be able to put it on my p5. yea i know its crazy so i'm looking for info on why it wont work. Also be aware that is i use this turbo i plan on buying cheap complete used engine so i dont screw up mine just incase.

Now i know that there's alot of stuff i still need(BOV,wastegate, intercooler, oil lines, headers to the turbo, turbo to the intake).what i'm looking for is just basic info on why i wouldnt be able to use the turbo, and please add anything from that short list i just made.

I've already got a magnaflow catback exhaust but i noticed that there is about a 2 foot section of pipe between the headers and the cat that will remain stock( i noticed this while looking at buying headers) someone plz explain if there is a wat to replace it or if i should just leave it be.

anyway thats all i can think of for now i'll be posting alot more too acquire some more info cuz i want as much as possible before is start looking at buying anything. please feel free to post the most basic info if you want i probably know alot of it but you never know. but plz be nice and thx for any help you can offer.

Your dads not crazy, just trying to be helpful! Sorry I can't help with info, as I am clueless about turbo upgraqdes... I'm sure you'll get some helpfull responses soon.

Good Luck!

The turbo really dosent make up much of the cost of a turbo kit. If you want to go turbo, I would get a turbo that already has manifolds deigned for it.

Even if the turbo would work in theory, you would still have to custom make a manifold- which may end up costing more than finding a mazdaspeed turbo + manifold from someone here who upgraded theirs.

From the header to the cat is call the mid-pipe...Check out Mental Addiction Motorsports for options on that.....Also, they have some nice turbo kits....I would also consider the cost of aquiring everything you'll need minus the turbo you already have and see the difference is pretty insignificant...

plz dont ignore my original post but if i were to buy a kit (and this is just the first place i found) like the one on this site or even buy an msp turbo I would have to lower the compression to at least 8:1 wouldnt I? If so whats the easiest way to do this
http://www.hiboost.com/kits.html

you can lower compression by getting new pistons... while you're replacing pistons you should replace the quasi-plastic rods that tend to break as well.

you don't need to lower the compression though. it will only allow you to boost more and put more power to the ground till you meet the next roadblock; tranny.

all of these problems are aways down the road though... at least 100whp from where you're at now. if you are looking to get into the turbo end of this car with your dad, I'd suggest looking at the forced induction section of the forum. it'll allow you and your dad to realize the potential and limitations of what you're trying to do and your dad's knowledge will only help you sort through the crap :D

w/e you decide to do, have fun with it...

Good idea though.

Turbos were in machinery before they were performance parts for personal cars.

Garrett's are good from what I hear. As for piecing together a kit, good luck with that, I'll be getting a complete one first, then going from there. As for the midpipe, good upgrade, put mine in this weekend, every little bit helps.

Agreed. It's definitely possible, but when you add up all of the costs, it will probably cost you more to piece a kit together, rather than buying a complete kit. You wouldn't necessarily have to get anything custom made, but in essence, you would be buying everything from a kit except for the turbo itself.

Definitely work out the prices though and see what would be best.

Read Corky Bell's book "Maximum Boost"...everything you need to know about designing and building a turbo system is there. You should be on the road for less than $2k.

i have always wanted to get this book for the past many years.....just ordered one from half.com

What model is the turbo? First you need to know if it's a proper size for the application.
