Spicy Orange Mazdaspeed Protege #1439
My stock turbo seals have gone bad.

What should I do?

A.)Buy the $700 dollar kit for brand new internals and use the old housing
B.)Find a used one
C.)Take mine and have it rebuilt
D.)Buy a gt28rs

i have a friend that has a stock one for sale, i think it has around 110k on it.

I'd go with option D. Same thing happened on my MSP, I didn't want to pay the 700 for the rebuild kit, so I bought a used garrett t3-t4, but it was a pain to rebuild and the flanges didn't match up. I never got around to making custom flanges. Looking back, I wish I would have forked out the cash for a new turbo that would have fit.

Yea I really want the gt28rs, but what all goes along with replacing the stock with the "disco potato"? i.e. slim fans, tune, boost controller ? what all need to be purchased and/or changed?

Tune and boost controller aren't necessary, and you may not need slim fans but i'm not positive on that. How many miles did the turbo last?

Well I'll tell you the story behind the turbo: I live in Virginia, but I found the msp on craigslist in Kentucky, so i drove up there with my dad. Upon arriving the owner of the car had the turbo out of the other msp he was selling, but had told us he took the one out of the spicy orange one as well (which I've heard can throw off the balance...). Anyways we bought the car with 109,000 miles. It started having problems at about 112,000 which is when I checked the cold pipe off the turbo and noticed oil pooling up, and that the bov was getting oil in it as well...

So my question really is, what mods will it take to put the gt28rs on the car? and estimated cost of each.

Thanks

Turbos are cheap, you can pick up a t25 for a hundred bucks. The disco potato would be pretty cool though, I've helped put one on an sr20. If you're going to do it right you need at the minimum: injectors, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, an aftermarket tuning device of your choosing, and I believe a clocking kit for the turbo. You can probably bolt the disco right on but if you're going to do it do it right.

That sucks, I bet he knew the turbo he put on there was on it's last legs. It's simple to check for shaft play. Injector's aren't necessary with a 28rs, lots of people just drop it right in place of the T25.
