tsb about rust on brakes

i was confused about this whole thread a while back, on what rust was normal and what wasnt. so i took a picture of my brakes. can someone tell me if this rust is normal? thanks

picture.

Mine has rust around the rotors too and its only 6 months old. Is there really a TSB about this? I haven't heard about it.

Lisa

There's a TSB about rust on the hub, not the rotor. The part the brake pad contacts will rub off after a bit of a drive, too.

The fix was to sand, prime, and paint the hub. It was all about appearance and not about performance or safety.

my dealership did it for me, no problem, looks really good
just ask, they should do...

you have a problem there... That entire circle should be clean of any sort of rust after one application of the brake pads. The rust would only be around the part that has the studs coming through it (hub). YOu might have a bad set of pads on that or need to change them or something. if they look like that after normal driving you need to get them replaced!!!!

that was actually after i had just washed the car. i checked them today after i drove a bit and they were clean. so i guess its all fine.

What part does the rust TSB relate to?

I have rust on my rotors (normal) and also rust on the hub (and on the little ridge that is adjacent to the rotor. These hub parts do not contact the pads, and the rust stays on. Is that the part that the dealer will fix per the TSB?

It does look a little bad (especially after this winter), though I might wait at least 6 months for drier weather. Is waiting OK, I assume?

thanks

The alloy that brake rotors are made from is prone to rusting. They use a high carbon alloy and you get it wet and it'll literally be rusty 10 minutes later, but it's so superficial that you can wipe it off with your bare hands. It's totally normal.

Lisakay,
You think everyone's anal, but I think the rust on the hub portion looks ugly, esp. after you've washed your car and your chrome wheels are supershiny but then you see this ugly red rust. It just doesn't look good, esp. on a relatively new car. Why do you think Mazda put out a tsb on it???

Huh? I don't understand.. I don't think anyone is anal... in fact, I totally agree with you that the rust on the hub looks bad also.. I even painted mine silver to cover it up.. I was just saying that I didn't like kyredp5 calling us anal for worrying about the rust.

Then go out and paint it and quit whining.

I wasn't whining about anything.. and I already did paint it. :)

and btw- I love the clear bumper lights on your car!! Was it a lot of work? I really want clear ones on mine..

No, it took like 30 minutes using a coping saw. If I would have had a dremel it would have only taken like 10 min.

If you want, I've got a whole thread of what I did somewhere around here.

Lisakay, sorry. didn't look carefully enough - as Homer Simpson says, "Doh!!!"

But I'm gonna get it done at the dealership now that winter's gone (I think) - it looks really ugly now.

np madbiker.. all is forgiven and forgotten.. :)
they are soo easy to paint!! After I FINALLY got my wheels/tires off the car.. it didn't take long at all.. i painted the calburors red while I was in there painting the hub silver.. I think it looks pretty darn good.. :D
