trying to found out emmsisions for North Carolina?

:
2002 Mazda Protege 5
i want to put some OBX headers on my protege 5 but i don't know if they will pass inspection. does anyone know if they will be legal and pass inspection in north carolina?

I believe it depends on where you live. I know in most metropolitan areas; Greensboro, Charlotte, Raleigh and perhaps Fayetteville and surrounding counties require a computerized emissions test connected to the vehicle OBDII plug. I don't know if it will pass with the OBX header, is it emissions certified or does it say for off road use only? They do look under the hood and the form used anywhere in the state has a emissions check off for evidence of emissions tempering.

I believe any OBDII test just ensures you are not throwing codes. If you install the header with the nonfouler trick for the O2 sensor, you should pass, providing there is no sniffer or visual inspection.

There is a tampering inspection for NC inspections. It includes; catalytic converter, air injection system, PCV valve, unleaded gas restrictor, exhaust gas recirculation, thermostatic air control, fuel evaporation control, oxygen sensor, gasoline tank cap.

The form is computer generated, the inspectors are licensed and the have to buy a computer system designed to check emissions. If they are caught not doing the inspections correctly they get suspended one year.

If you try to get by after changing to a header I would advise saving the old parts and plan to re-install them in case your car fails. I had a 33 year old MG fail two years ago because the smog pump had been removed. Lucky I had the parts to bolt on.

oh ok...i don't know if it says on there street legal or for offroad use only i would have to check that. but its my understanding that most parts for the protege 5's are street legal.

Up here in ontario we have sniffer tests, as well as a quick visual inspection and check engine light check. I know a lot of people running aftermarket headers on their Proteges and no one has failed because their emmissions were too high.

my friend was telling me i should pass because of the second cat, and that you only need one to pass. and one of his buddies is licensed.

edit:i have an obx header btw

yeah that is the same thing that i was told. i think that it should pass i mean as far as i can tell alot of people have them on there cars and they seem to pass so i don't think that i am to worried about it. i don't have the dough right now to get it anyway. by the way frank354 how do you like the header? is it reliable and made of good qaulity. all that i have done is a mazdaspeed axel back.

They are supposd to do a tampering inspection, tampering will cause a fail. The top oxygen sensor stands out like a sore thumb. The computer tells the technician what should be on the car. If you find a lax inspector you may get by.

Good luck.

i love it. great top end gains, gives the car more life..especially with an intake/exhaust setup...i havnt seen any cracks or weld breaks and am pretty sure not many people have. i picked mine up brand new from a member for $140.

alright great. i think that i am going to get it as soon as i can get some money lol. what kinda intake do you got?
