Trunk area rattling

Hellow everyone:

Was wondering if anyone's CX-5 with all season cargo rubber tray and retractable trunk cover has experienced any rattling noise when the rear wheels go over bumps/uneven terrain. It doesn't do it all the time, but most of the time it does. I have been trying to investigate it. However as you can imagine it is hard when I am in driver seat and noise is coming from all the way at the back. I am 90% sure it isn't my cargo becasue I have tried removing it on weekends and noise is still there. I normally try not to bring cars back to dealership for disassembly unless its very serious. I feel the factory guys will always do a better job than the dealership technicians. (Had some bad experiences with my Nissan where tech didn't put back all screws, tabs, etc)

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

Did you check to see if there are any loose tools in the spare tire compartment?

I have the same problem and have been unable to figure out what it is. I will eventually take it to the dealer when I have time. It seems to be coming from the passenger side of the trunk area as best I can tell.

Hi, that was my second guess. As far as i know, all the tools are snug in their styerofoam spots. I just called to try schedule an appointment with the local dealer, and they said they only do warranty stuff on weekdays.. Was not happy to hear that. Means I have to book a day off work to fix a problem with the car....

Try driving in the same conditions with all the rear seats down. If the noise goes away than most likely its the latches for the rear seat rattling a little bit.

I had a rattle that was driving me crazy for over a week. I was taking it on drives holding pieces of plastic and tapping on the dash with no luck. Then I realized it was emanating from the glove box area so I took everything out of it (mostly manuals and a CD case). After investigating more closely the contents I realized that it was a single CD rattling inside its case that was making the noise. All that time I swore it was my Mazda and it wasn't. I had to get rid of the CD case because no matter where I put it, it would rattle.

My passengers in the back mention hearing some rattling from the back however I never hear it (probably my poor hearing). For the record I also have the factory retracting cargo cover.

This is the issue that I’m having. Took it to the dealership and it was the middle section of the back seat, basically the latch was not aligned correctly or at least that’s what the dealership said. They try “readjusting” the latch position but that didn’t help.

Basically drive with the seats down and see if the noise goes away. I’m not taking it to the dealership again so I will probably try a couple of DIY options. It seems like this is not just a Mazda issue.

UPDATE.. I THINK I have the source isloated..it is the cargo cover. I tried to add a small piece of padding foam at the two ends where the cargo cover sits in a recessed area at trunk (both sides are spring tensioned). and the noise is absent...Ill keep on looking and verifying it... I just find it not a good customer service when dealers can only diagnose rattles/warranty issues during weekdays....

Was going to suggest the cargo cover... We don't have it, and we have never heard any noise. Good luck on your fix if you nailed it!

hope you nailed it. as stupid as this sounds, if you have a plastic license plate frame, it rattles, i put an ear plug behind my frame and one behind my plate and tightened it down, no more rattle. ghetto I know but....
