I've had my 3s 5-door for about a year and 16000mi. and have averaged 22mpg city, 25 hwy. Hwy is cruise control 80mph. Mine is an auto and the AC is running constantly, it's Texas after all and we only have 2-3 cold days a year.
You guys that get 30mpg on the hwy with your 3s, is that 5sp or auto?
Just breaking in the engine (M3 sport GT, auto). I got 11.4L/100km (20.4miles/gallon) city and 7.4L/100km (31.4miles/gallon) highway (conservative driving, lots of cruising).
3s auto, last one was 23.9 and they have been very consistant around 24 city. This is with a heavy (wouldn't say lead though) foot and full A/C every where i go. All hwy i got 32 mpg which i was really happy with since the auto is rated at 29 hwy. This was still with a/c on.
I can get about 300 miles before the gas light comes on. It's taken 12.5 gallons after driving around and letting the light come on, which leads me to believe there's about 2-3 gallons in reserve. I'm guessing if I let it run dry, I could probably get a good 350 miles to the tank, but that's just a rough guess.
my friend with his mazda 3 s gets better mileage than me, He has Exhaust and Intake, as do I and his foot is a bit heavier than mine and he gets better, i Average about 25-27mpg, And I know he gets better than that.
On www.turbonator.com, they talk about selling superchargers that add up to 35 horsepower and up to 31% more MPG. They sell them for 69.95, I believe, and I was wondering if the claims they make could possibly be true. Naturally, I'd believe that super/turbocharging your engine would make it consume more gas, but they claim a cleaner burn along with what I mentioned before. Since it is a topic discussing gas mileage, I figured it would be appropriate to mention for those who do not know about it, or for those who do know and can either disclaim or vouch for it.
Well I took a trip today to the mountains and achieved what is the best I've seen in my 3 so far. I averaged 35.6mpg. This is in a 2004 3s Sedan w/ auto.
I followed some "hypermiling" techniques I've heard of the hybrid owners using. Basically drive like your brakes don't work. Build speed going down hills and coast down a little then hold speed going up the next hill.
MY FUEL CONSUMPTION SUCKS! I get like 400 kilometers per tank! I was expecting like 600ish.. Anyon else have this problem?? Oh there is almost 5000 Kilometers on my car now..
FOLLOW-UP @ 1500 MILES
It's still getting about 20+/-1mpg in mostly city super stop-and-go driving. A short road trip last weekend netted on average about 32mpg at 65 to 70mph, but upwards of 40 if I drove at Reagan-era speeds (anyone remember the torture of driving 55 back then?)
Filled-up today for the first time my 1-week old 3 S 5-door Manual. 353 miles with 11.8 gallon. That makes 30mpg, with about 60/40 highway/back roads and fast driving but not too heavy foot.
Not bad for a brand new car. I guess the EPA 32mpg highway is achieveable with a broken-in engine.
By the way, the reserve light went off at 343 miles. I drove another 10 miles before refueling, so that makes for about a 3 gallons reserve with a 14.5g total tank capacity.
Just got over 400 miles on one tank for the first time. (first)
90% of it was with the cruise set at 75 mph on my way up north. Ended up at 31.02 mpg for the tank and that makes my average of all time (since Feb '04) 27.87 mpg.
