Trouble with cruise control

I have a 2001 Protege. The cruise control does not hold the set speed at all. I turn on the cruise control and get up to the desired speed but the cruise control will not hold that speed at all and immediately decelerates when I let go of the set button.

Any ideas what's wrong???

Not to ask a stupid question but is it on? I know when I'm driving, my hand hits the button.

All I can say is that when I push the button inward the cruise control light on the instrument panel lights up. When I try to set the speed and let go of the switch it immediately loses speed and tries to downshift. I am wondering if I should check out the vacuum hoses and change them out and see if it works? Or possibly change out the switch on the steering column?? (even though the light comes on possibly it's not connecting (bad switch)??)

Check the vacuum hose to the intake manifold, and all other connections.
check to see if the actuator is attacked to the butterfly.
I posted a similar thread...should have read around a bit more, but this is what I have gotten so far. I have not tested these yet, but I will after work.

Hi im having a simular problem i just bought a 2003 Mazda Protege 5 and the cruise control is broken. Do you know if there is a fuse for the cruise control?
