Trouble? "obd-ii Compliance Voluntary Emission Recall Campaign 4907h"

Last week I received this fearsome document. I'm a Massachusetts resident and the recall applies to me. Without complying with the recall, I won't be able to re-register my Speed3.

Apparently Massachusetts has reciprocity with California law. This recall converts my OBD to California standards. Voluntary? Hah! Since California emission rules are tougher than Massachusetts', I'm worried that this work will hurt my car's performance, especially in full acceleration and driveability, including transitions.

Would anybody who knows anything about this matter please let me know as soon as you can? I will be grateful for your comments.

I live in San Diego right now and you have nothing to worry about. All the recall does is reflash the PCM with the latest software and replace the variable swirl shutter valve actuator that has been causing so many check enginge lights. That's all it is. The PCM reflash is for build dates between June 28, 2006 to May 31, 2007. The valve replacement is for build dates June 28, 2006 to February 3, 2007. The emissions equipment on the MS3 is the same in every state, so It won't hurt the performance of the car.

"Voluntary" means that Mazda did it without being forced to do it by NHTSA. It is not voluntary for us, at least for states that check.

Don't worry, it won't effect performance. Mine is fine.

your car *IS* already california emissions.... you bought it that way off the showroom! doing the recall will make neither gain or lose you performance because of so!

Re-Flash of PCM

This "voluntary" re-call was just performed on my car without my authorization. I can tell you that there is no question in my mind that the car does not pull as hard in 3rd gear in particular. The service mngr tried to explain that no effect should be noticed except that the power is now distributed more "Linear".

Right....I've been driving and racing GN's and changing programs on them since they came out. This feels like some timing, or potentially boost at mid and lower range has been pulled out.

This recall is not mandatory in my state. Needless to say, I'm torqued ( no pun intended) and I'm trying to make them reflash it to original. The way I bought it. He suggested I buy the aftermarket reflash!
