Tripoint Turbo Almost Done

I just called Mark @ Tripoint to order the ACT street clutch disk and he said they should have their turbo up and running in about a week. He said it is on the car now. It should be done and they should have dyno numbers soon. He said it was an Aerodyne turbocharger. Anyone had any experience with that turbo? I know it is a variable vein, it doesn't need oil or water lines either right?

I highly doubt that it will come with a VATN Turbo (Variable Area Turbine Nozzle). Those turbos are very unreliable and have been known to have serious problems overtime. I'd go more into detail as to why, but it would require more time that I care to give on the subject right now. Go do a search on the I-Club and you'll learn a lot more about them. I don't know about you guys, but a Turbo that doesn't need lubrication sounds pretty dangerous. The Aerodyne Unit is pretty expensive too and would make the kit non-affordable. The concept of the VATN is a lot better than how it actually turned out. Boost response would be cut inhalf thus the turbo would respond much more like a supercharger and boost would come soon after you blip the throttle. Well, that's the concept and providing a company can master the technology, it could create a revolution in turbo systems. I believe Garrett is currently working on a VATN and E-Turbo....that's right. Electronic turbo. Do some searches on google and read away. Hope that helped some.

Garrett has the E-turbo done it is in production and used in many city buses for low end boost. Very high price and limited.

VATN Turbos are cutting edge technology. I am slmost positive that they are exclusively used in racing applications because of the cost, as it is new technology. I agree with APEXistud it would be unaffordable for us. On the brighter side VATN's regulate exhaust gases in such a way that would eliminate the need for a wastegate and boost controllers which could save us anywhere from 600 to 1200 dollars. I'm sure though that there is some other controller to regulate the aspect ratio of the vanes and that would probably take the price of the boost controller. As far as reliability goes I have not yet read any article that said they were unreliable. Also did Tri Point offer an warranty with their turbo? This would be a good indicator of it reliability...

Check the miata boards..

I know that there are a couple of Miata aftermarket turbo systems that used Aerodyne turbos. They didn't put out as much horsepower, but a lot of people were happy with the quality and reliability. Go do a search on www.miataforum.com about Aerodyne turbos and you'll find a lot of info.
