Tripoint Cam Gears Fixed

I emailed Mark @ Tripoint and he said the exhaust gear is fixed and working. Price is $299. I may go ahead and get a set.

No clue what they changed. I assume they just redesigned them to not interfere with the sensor.

The HP gain will vary. It would be best to tune these on a dyno. You will probably see more gain if you use these with turbo or bigger cams. The gears alone may give you 3-4 whp with stock cams, but they may give you 10-20 with bigger cams or turbo, just hard to say until someone actually gets them and dyno tunes them.

THe install involves removing the valve conver the timing belt and teh cam sprokets. Its a fairly easy install just take your time and don't force teh timing belt off. It would be easiest to do these if you are planning to swap in teh J-Spec cams and install them at the same time. I would get the other gear or trade mine in on the newer one but I sold it a while back to another guy and he is using it on his intake cam just as I am. If you put these on without replacing the cams it would be a good idea to get a new valve cover gasket although it isn't neccisary.

Just remember - anything that can be adjusted, can be adjusted wrong :)

We had a Civic Si on our dyno here with adjustable cam gears. We strapped it to the dyno and started tweaking. He gained 25 hp and had a much smoother curve when we were done. It wasn't that he GAINED 25 hp from the gears, he'd actually lost at least 15 when he installed them...

I knew something was up with that dyno. A member on here a while back posted that dyno and he was trying to tell everyone that he gained all that power from just installing the cam gears only. I was like yeah right. But he swore up and down that he gained all that from tuning the stock cam gears.

hey

imo i dont see any need for cam gears. if your car is set up correctly in the first place there is no need for adjustment. i believe you can get more benefit out of just replaceing the stock cam gears with lightweight ones (ie saving rotational mass)

* Side note...are you talking about waaay back in the day...the ezboard mazdamp3.com days...I remember a member sent me dyno chart pics and was claiming 200hp on NA mods back in the early days before most mp3 mods were even available. Are we talking about the same member? *

It was a Civic Si, not a Protege.

It's quite possible some gains are possible with adjustable cam gears. The Mazda engineers had different priorities than we do.

Regarding the install, if you did the j-spec cams at the same time wouldn't you have to get a whole new shim kit to adjust the valve lash with the new cams??

If you use the Mazda cams, then the base circles should be identical and thus you won't need to reshim. I went into mine thinking that I might have to re-shim, but the lash was spot in the middle at .010. (spec is .0089 to .0112)
