We had a Civic Si on our dyno here with adjustable cam gears. We strapped it to the dyno and started tweaking. He gained 25 hp and had a much smoother curve when we were done. It wasn't that he GAINED 25 hp from the gears, he'd actually lost at least 15 when he installed them...
