I've had similar experiences with several cars...they were usually serviced by the monkey lube boys, so they air gun that s*** on.
But seriously, I use Mobil One filters. Pick one up and look at the hieroglyphics on the side (ie pictogram instructions). You DON'T put oil on the rubber gasket, spin it on until it makes contact with the engine block, and then hand tighten it a quarter turn -- this is all from memory, so it may be more than a quarter turn. I usually snug it up by hand just to be sure it will stay on. They just spin right off 5000 miles later.
I have a link to a long term oil life study that shows that Mobil One can go 12000 miles between drains, as long as you top it off every month. But I stick to the 5k cycle because even synthetic oil is cheap compared to paying for non-warranty work, and I also rotate my tires at the same time. Even if you went to a long drain cycle, listen to what Sir Nuke said. The filter is good for about 5-6k, then it's just clogged. Even my Mobil One filters are $4 at most.
This stuff is just cheap insurance. I pay about $30 for 4 qts of Mobil One and filter, and do it myself. I could pay the dealer the same to do it for me with cheap dino oil, but I'm one of those people that has to do it myself unless I feel I'm in over my head.
