Transmission stuck in low gear

So driving home from work yesterday, I was doing about 40 and all of the sudden my car lost acceleration, I couldn't get it to speed up. I coasted off to the side of the road and put it into park, then tried again and I was able to drive, but now I was stuck in a low gear, I could only do about 35 mph and my RPMs would average about 4-5000 while doing it. I made it home, and when I put it into park, I couldn't rev my engine above 1500RPM. Reverse still worked fine though. I shut the car off, turned it back on in 5 seconds later and the issue was fixed. After searching around, I see there's quite a few similar complaints, but just about everyone of them said they took it to a dealer and they found nothing wrong. Has anyone had any experience with this issue? Was it a fluke, or did it seem to reoccur and what did you do to fix it?

Something caused it to go in limp mode. Could have been a misfire or some other engine abnormality.

Your car went into the limp mode and your CEL should be on. You can go to Auto Zone to read the error code(s) and get a print-out for free.

We posted at the same time, but my CEL never came on. I had no errors at all on my dash.

There might still be a pending code but this fault sounds catastrophic enough it should have triggered a CEL. It's still worth checking though.

Okay good to know it was just a safety mode then, I'll make my way into an autozone later today and see if they can find anything. I didn't know about limp mode, so that's definitely nice to know.
