Transmission Problems

98 Honda Prelude Boosted, and a 03.5 Mazdaspeed Protege
Ok so I'm really hoping what I have to say doesn't involve me having to fork out money for a new transmission. But the last couple of days I am having problems shifting my 03.5 Protege into 2nd, 4th, and reverse. It feels like it is locking me out of gear then if i take my foot off the clutch and put it back into nutural and then try it again it goes fine. I am somewhat new to the Mazda Family and would like any input. It is kind've throwing me off cause it only doing it in the gears that are all down gears when shifting. I hope this is all making sense!

Could be a few things but here's something you can do which won't cost you jack. Bleed the clutch system at the slave cylinder with fresh fluid and see if that makes shifting easier. Your slave cylinder could be on its way out.

How many miles on your car and are you still on the stock clutch?

I'd replace the slave, that's what it sounds like to me and it's not that expensive. My cousin broke his trans and clutch because he was to cheap to replace his in an Accord.

it has 53k and yes it is still on the stock clutch. Thanks for your help so far I will bleed the clutch and see if that changes anything.

Does anyone have a link on how to bleed these things. I have bleed my old Stealth before but that was from the back of the transmission. I didn't even realize that the Protege's clutch fluid resevoir was the same as the break fluid resevoir until yesterday.

Ok so I bled the clutch fluid from the Slave Cylinder yesterday drove it around town for about 10 miles and it was fine this morning on my way to work it decided to lock me out of second once. So am I safe to say that I need to replace the slave cylinder or could something else be causing this. I don't want to replace something and have it be something totally different. Also any idea where I can get a slave cylinder without having to wait 2 weeks for one. the local parts store and summit racing both told me it would take two weeks to get one. Also after more research could it possibly be the clutch master cylinder or more then likely just the slave.

Mazda parts vendors on here or get on from the local parts store. Unless you beat the **** out of your car most likely the clutch and transaxle are fine. Replace the slave cylinder and see what happens. Hard to sat definitively w/o seeing the car in person. Slave cylinder should not cost that much and you should not need a new clutch with only 53K.

Thanks, ya I ordered the slave cylinder from some site for $50 and it should be in this weekend hopefully. It doesn't look to tough to install so I'll see how it's running after I get it on.

I just had a friend call me last night with similar issues on his civic. Replaced the slave in about 10 minutes and the car is driving around happily today.

Hope it goes as well for you as it did for us.

The slave cylinder is located on the transmission.

Ok so I just changed the slave cylinder and surprise surprise it's still locking me out of gears. Mainly 2nd, and sometimes 4th and reverse. So we were looking around at the Resevoir the holds the clutch/brake fluid and I noticed a slow leak where the resevoir bolts onto the brake booster. Would that have anything to do with my problem. Like maybe air getting into the line from that. But I am no mechanic and would like any input on this.

Ok so how do I fix that can I just replace the part that holds the fluid that bolts on to the brake booster.

Would this not be a problem with your syncro's? Basically you're double clutching to shift. I've had to do that only with cars that have bad syncros.....maybe time to tear that tranny apart :(

That's something I didn't want to hear!! But ya I guess your right I was hoping it was non tranny related.

I will not build anything on this car. I bought it for a daily and that's how it will stay, lol. I am thinking about changing the tranny fluid and seeing if that makes a difference before I start tearing anything apart.

thats what I would do on man.... but it sounds like synchros... there not hard to change out... I did mine while mechanic was welding my LSD, took me maybe 10 minutes...I take that back... It may not be the snyc's how long has it been doing this and did the problem start with all the gears all at once?

Ya that is what I am not getting. It does it in 2nd more then any gear but I guess in town driving that makes since since im not always going to 4th. But I noticed this a week ago in 2nd gear then the next day I noticed reverse and 4th. We bled the slave it was fine for about 10miles then did it again so we just replaced the slave last night and it is still doing it.

And the leak is coming from where the master cylinder resevoir tank bolts onto the brake booster.
