Transmission pops out of 3rd gear - Help

My car has recently started popping out of 3rd gear under acceleration.
It seems to occur more under heavier acceleration but not at idle or cruising.

Factors to consider:
-Grinding never happens during shifting so i doubt it is related to the synchros.
-While accelerating, it is fairly easy to pull out of 3rd without the clutch depressed; but not the other gears.
-The play in the shifter is shortened in the forward throw gears (1st, 3rd, 5th) while accelerating.
-Passenger motor mount is torn, i suspect others might be failing then too.

Could this problem be caused by a worn shift linkage or is it internal transmission damage?

You motor mounts could be bad. Pretty common on thesecars. Mine would do it every so often... My mounts were shot. I'd say check em out.

+1. Replace your mounts and then check to see if the problem is still there. I drive an auto, but from what I've read our clutches can be kinda touchy with broken motor mounts.

What about the bushings within the shift linkage or the ones holding the shift lever in place? Could that affect just one gear?

I just would think if the motor mounts were causing shifting problems it would affect more than one gear.

How would this explain just 3rd popping out?

it's your mounts? ever have issues going into R?? i know i did and 3rd was always loose.....i replaced all four, 2 were in multiple pieces and the other 2 were almost there....with the news ones in....no probs....now i just need a new shifter

i can almost tell you that im 99% sure its your mounts. if your side mount is tore its more than likely your front and or rear are torn. my mounts were torn to nothing. i had nothing holding the rear together except the fact it was bolted to the car. the front was hanging on by a thread. the only gear i would have pop out occasionally was 3rd. all the other gears were fine even with the front and rear completely trashed. id say get them looked at or check em out yourself. i bet there gone.

yeah the fun part about the front and rear being gone was the motor lash.....hitting the throttle in 2nd or 4rd and letting off and just feeling that motor buck

OMG it was horrible. i hated driving the car...i felt bad for my transmission and leftover mounts lol

yeah it was.....i bet if he pull the mounts and pulls the bolts...the inside of the front and rear just fall out
