Transfer case oil change - doubts .

I have 2012 CX-9 Touring AWD. So far ran 50k.

While going through the forums , I realized that CX-9 has significant issues with the transfer case and I really need to take care of it. However, I came across some doubts -

1. Transfer case has only one plug. I have to pump out fluid from it and then fill new through the same. Correct ?
2. Owner manual says - I have to use SAE 74W-140 fluid. Can I use a 'synthetic' SAE 74W-140 ? ( like - https://www.amazon.com (commissions earned) )
3. Normally , what should be the frequency to change the transfer case oil ?

Thanks in advance.

yep, 2007-2015 CX-9's (AWD models only) have very little transfer case oil capacity (1/2 a liter),
it turns to sludge over time and the transfer case seizes if the oil is not changed,
everything you need to know is in this link: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123847373-Changing-CX-9-transfer-case-gear-oil-%28photos%29
there's no drain plug, only one fill plug, you need an electric pump to pump out the old oil, or if you're handy, you can add a drain plug yourself at the bottom of the transfer case. If you're already @ 50,000 miles, you should change asap, should have changed a long time ago like 25,000 miles. Google "CX-9 transfer case" you'll see tons of problems if the oil is not changed. Dealers keep new transfer cases in stock and change them at a high rate.

P.S.> surprisingly, new CX-9 also has very little oil capacity (1/2 a liter), not sure what that means long term, but we'll find out once we get real world data.

Thx. I was unaware about the transfer case issue. I purchased pre-certified from dealer at 35k and put additional 15k on it by myself. I'm very much doubtful that previous owner ( this was a fleet vehicle as per Carfax ) did change any of these oils like rear diff, atf, transfer case etc.
Anyhow thanks for the link and details.

A) Tomorrow is sunday b) I have suction electric pump too C) advanced auto parts is nearby and does have Mobil 75w 140 synthetic in stock.
So this is going to be changed tomorrow morning very first thing.

I appreciate for your quick response. Thx.

ok, so finally, yesterday I changed the transfer case oil and created a video too so other beginners can benefit from it :-) !

thanks !! kulkarnipb, you da man.

I know this will be very helpful to AWD owners, thanks for taking the time to do this.
but dear god, the music you chose is like an 80's video game/marching band , LOL, j/k

looks like you did the procedure just in time, your original OEM oil condition looked sludgy and deteriorated.
also, as you mentioned since this was a fleet vehicle, it doesn't look like it was ever changed.

I wonder if the new 2016 AWD owners have to do this also, might be easier though if they have a drain plug now.

The music, I chose, was free, otherwise youtube blocks the video due to copyright issues. Free is good ;-).

By the way, thanks to you. I wasn't planning to change transfer case oil but after your reply on Saturday night, I made the plan to do that asap.

Regarding 2016 CX-9, not sure but mostly - mazda will put the plug somewhere inside engine so owners or local mechanics will never be able to handle that neatly. And then dealers with some expensive machine can change the oil after you pay them hefty sum ( or ransom ?? ) !!! Sell a watch for a dollar and then make money on repairs. I think that is what it will be ;-) Let's see ;-) World is damn crazy for your hard earned money !!
