Tranny Swap? Auto for Auto-Stick

I have an 02 P5 Auto and was wondering if anyone has ever heard of or seen someone switch to the auto-stick transmission? Is it even possible? I know what you're going to say, "Why not just convert it to a manual?" It's my wives car and she doesn't like manuals as much as I do. I would like the option of switching gears when I drive it. Plus it would be a nice option for going into the mountains. Thanks.

You could get manu-matic trannys on the 03 proteges, so you could swap one in but it would be expensive.

The transmissions are the same. The difference is a shifter plate and in most cases a different ecu.

So the Transmissions are the same. What do mean be shift plate? The shifter itself? I figured I would need an ECU. I wonder what else I would need. I'm going to find a junked P5 locally or some one that's parting one out and try and get the parts.

The shift plate in the center console... reg auto is straight front to back... the manumatic is a completely different plate as it goes to the side as well.

Not totally true. The differences are, the shifter mechanism on the floor, the ECU, the sportshift module, the cluster, a shitload of wiring is different including a different engine harness. You would have to remove the dash completely to get to the wiring.

oh wow, never knew it was all that detailed

Should have known. I was hoping it was something semi simple. It would probably be easier to just switch to a manual. At least then I would know what I'm getting into.

It might not be as sexy as the manu-matic. The 02 automatic can shift into 1, 2, D. When you push the button for overdrive it keeps it out 4th. So you can shift into 1,2,3, and push the button again to get it into 4th (overdrive). For once and awhile performance shifting it works, but I would not do it all the time.

just keep it as is, or go find another protege with the sport shift and sell your current p5.
IMHO its just not worth it, its not even worth it to even do a swap on the p5 unless you find yourself one hell of a deal on the parts needed for the swap and having access to all tools needed.

dealer has different part numbers for the transmission as the sport shift supposedly doesn't have the cable attached to it that changes the selector on the tranny.

WoW dude. Then the dealer don't know s***. It still has the cable to go the selector.

I think you're right dxave. For the time being I'm going to flush the tranny fluid and in a couple of weeks rebuild the head and throw in some new camshafts. I think I'll be happy with that for about a month.
