Trailer wiring affecting the cruise control

At the time I installed a Curt class III hitch to my 2008 CX-9, I also installed Curt's powered converter box. All worked well for a few years, then the left trailer signal light failed to function. Since I was leaving on a trip, I had to get a new converter in a hurry, so I purchased a non-powered converter from O'Reilly Auto Parts. All the lights functioned properly after the installation. However, I soon discovered that activating a directional signal will cancel the cruise control. This is a minor annoyance in that I have to hit the cruise reset each time I change lanes. This issue occurs with or without a trailer attached to the harness. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Can anybody offer an explanation or a fix? I suspect I will have to purchase another powered converter box to resolve this problem.
