So am I correct in thinking that if you have the tow prep package you do not need to run wires back to the battery?

Also, is it better to buy the Mazda OEM harness rather than an after market one that would come with the aftermarket hitch?

That is correct; all the wires are already ran to the back of the vehicle. The benefit of buying the OEM harness is that it is plug and play. The wires that are already ran in the vehicle have a connector on the end of them and the OEM harness plugs right into that connector. No splicing of wires needed.
