trailer hitch factory options

The factory options list shows two different hitches, but no details are given. One is listed as class II, the other says nothing.

Class II hitches are generally available in 1.25 inch receivers (us. 2000 lbs limit or so) and 2 inch (us. 3500 lbs). Class I hitches are available in 1.25 inch receivers only with 2000 lbs limit.

What exactly is Mazda selling? Does the hitch sets come with trailer wiring installed? Do the packages come with upgraded transmission cooler or alternator?

Unless something has changed in 2008. There is only one kind of factory hitch from Mazda. It is a Class II. It comes with wiring harness, hitch and a rubber hitch cover.

There is an additional wiring harness you need if you have a sport model without power seats.

I believe the Mazda hitch is a class 2 hitch with a max pull rating of 2,000 pounds.

Just buy a Draw Tite or Hidden Hitch (same company) class II 2" hitch. Cheaper and easier than the OEM hitch. The 2" receiver has more trailering and bike rack options. Also you do not have to notch the bumper cover like you do for the OEm hitch.
