towing?

2002 Protege LX manual
This is potentially a very stupid question, because I know that the owner's manual forbids it with a simple "Never tow with your car." or something like that...

That said, I'd like to know if anyone has tried towing a small trailer with your Protege. I'm thinking in the under 1000# range, like a motorcycle, PWC, or small cargo trailer.

Every other small car I've owned was rated (by the manufacturer) to tow at least 1000# with a hitch, so what gives with the Protege?

I don't currently own anything towable, but I was thinking about buying a PWC sometime in the next year, and I'd like to not have to borrow a friend's truck to get it to the lake, if I don't have to...

yeah, good luck with that. things to consider: tongue weight for the trailer hanging off the back of your car, brake efficiency with all that extra weight when you're tooling down the road at 55+mph, etc.

if the owners manual says you shouldn't do it, i wouldn't even try.

i've seen some pros with a hitch on the back, just watch your weight i would assume, or get a trailer where the weight isnt so much on the tongue
