Towing noob info wanted: What can I tow?

This type of trailer would work better. Longer neck, bigger tires, leaf suspension, and the trailer sits level (important)

Trailer Size = 5x10
Weight = 850 lbs
Tire Size = 15 x 5
Axles = Dexter Easy Lube Axles
LED lights
2" Coupler
Bolted Jack

We have a similar trailer though ours is a 5x8' with torsion suspension, about 730#. While we don't tow long distances, I've exceeded the 2000# recommended load considerably a couple of times. The worst example was 2.5 yards of manure compost for the garden. By my calculations that was a 3800# load. While I was well aware there was a significant load behind, the CX-5 didn't seem to mind.

Good to know for shorter distances.

I think you can pull a 2000 pound trailer and have your car fully loaded? Might be wrong though. I think the Europe version says 3000 pounds, same car, so there is a "buffer" Braking is a concern, and of course not burning up you powertrain would be the other.

The car will definitely know before the driver, if anything is starting to get burnt up. When I worked at Mazda, we had a few cars come in that overheated from coolant leaks or waterpump failures, and the car went into a mini-limp mode, where it had a normal top speed, but the transmission shifted early to prevent excess heat buildup as well as deactivated certain systems like the A/C, power sapping items, etc. These cars are pretty intelligent.

Just picked up my 16.5 CX-5 Touring on Thursday. Thinking I'm going to put a Curt Class III hitch on it. I have a 5.5'x10' utility trailer and a John Deere lawn tractor I pull on occasion. It weighs about 1600# total. Thinking it shouldn't have any problems pulling it. Just came from a 14 Mazda 6. They drive very similar, but it is kind of nice that the CX-5 is geared a bit shorter. It will especially be nice when pulling my little trailer on the highway.

Shouldn't be a problem. See my post #22 above.
