i took my car to the dealer for a rattling sound that i keep hearing coming from my engine bay. it only happens when idling at 1500 rpm or when im turning. i dropped it off, they said that couldnt be fixed but it wouldnt cause a problem. I went to pick it up and i took off only to hear a louder rattle. I left it there and told them to fix it. they drove it and said they heard something different so they replaced my front sway bar and bushings. They said the rattle i hear comes from the exhaust mani and that in the near future Mazda will have something out to fix it. They didnt specify what it was though, any ideas?

I have a little rattling coming from what seems like the heat shield on the exhaust manifold. Only happens idling at ~1500 rpm's as well. Doesn't really bother me, I only hear it on cold starts where the car idles that high.

Sure its not your hood? Mine rattled like that, I was convinced it was coming from the engine bay but eventually traces it to the hood under the right RPM conditions, particularly when the car was cold. Few adjustments and no more rattle.

All these dealerships are the same, I've been in on 2 occations to have a rattle fixed.

Both times I get there and its sorry we could not find it.
So I grab the service manager, rev the engine and suddenly the rattle is present.
Both times it was a quick fix.
Maybe I have good ears or something, but I don't see why someone can't do their job.

So next time they tell me they can't find the problem I know just to show up a little sooner and show them where it is.

PS in my case it was the dash, on the passenger side. The vertical panel like the fuse panel cover on the driver side. It was out of place. Again only rattled at lower RPM's.

its not so much that they can't do their job, they just dont want to do their job, mostly because mazda probably puts a lot of pressure on them NOT to waste their time on smaller jobs that dont really make a difference in regards to how the car performs (like a loose heat sheild, or a fuse cover), its all about the all mighty dollar... also because the dealership mechanics get paid by the hour, so they'd rather just sit on their ass talking about how drunk they got the nite previous, instead of fixing your car :p...
