ok, i did a little experimentation, just to see what the sound was like, and removed the resonance chamber above the radiator. i would like to get an intake, but not if it is going to make the car much-much louder than stock. i also like the looks of the AEM better than the Injen.

so, here is my question:
could someone try to give me a good description of how the car sounds with the AEM intake as compared to the stock set-up WITHOUT the resonance chamber above the radiator?

i would really appreciate it your comments.

oh yeah, this stems from an experience i had with my wife's civic. i bought an intake for her car, and the sound from the intake grew tremendously over the stock sound. however, my protege is much quieter than her car, both being stock.

i have the aem intake and i love it......there is a small noise increase if you barely touch the gas, however if you floor it, then it gets much much louder, it has a deep pitch throatier noise....i honestly think it sounds bad ass

I too have an AEM. While I did not do the resonanator-removal test, I can tell you that the sound changed VERY little when just accelerating normally. But like mp3boy said, if you step on it, you'll definitely hear a difference. I think it sounds awesome. In fact, I found myself accelerating hard a lot after I first put it on, just so I could enjoy the new noise :).

BTW, its not the "pissed-off bumble bee" sound, just a nice throaty roar being unleashed from your engine.

I agree w/everyone else. The AEM has one of the best sounds i've heard on a car next to the ever popular, psst from a turbo. My buddy has a Civic SI with an AEM cold air, and he loves the sound of mine. The larger displacement combined with a different intake manifold set up creates an awesome sound at full throtle or under load. I'd highly recomend it.

i appreciate all the comments folks, but the thing i am really concerned about is that it will be a lot louder than stock. i put an intake on my wife's civic, and she had a fit because it was VERY loud. now, on my protege, i removed the resonance chamber that crosses over the radiator, and it got a little louder, but much more agreesive sounding. if the AEM is just a little bit louder than stock, but much more agressive sounding, i will consider it. but, if it is much louder than stock, i won't. i don't mind a better sound, just not a louder one.

Well like we've been saying... If you drive it normal, and don't race it, you won't be able to tell the difference. But when you slam on the gas, you'll be happy with your purchase :).

As far as the sound goes - I'd say that it is there if you need/want it but if you drive in the lower rpm's it is nice and quiet, but on the other hand if you want to down shift and throw the needle up to 5 or 6 rpm's you will hear the nice sound of one of the best intakes I've seen.........I say go for it! You'll love it!(thumb)

i do appreciate all your input, and i think you have answered what i want to know. i want an intake that isn't much louder than stock, while still giving me a deeper growl when i get on it.

the stock system really isn't very exciting. when i get on it, it gets louder, but does not sound very mean. it almost sounds like the engine wants to explode. (lots of mechanical screaming)

i think i will have to go down to the local shop and ask them what kind of return poilcy they have.
