To boost or not to boost.....

:
2006 Evo MR
What engine work should I do to my car prior to getting a kit like the one Hiboost or Perfworks offers. Just curious what would help squeeze a little more power out of my car if I do decide to go that route.

Their kits are made for stock engines. Fortunately, you can tune their kits for every upgrade you can think of...

If you want to squeeze more power out, raise the boost and strengthen the engine accordingly with pistons and rods and bearings and gaskets, etc.

a less restictive exhaust would benefit you...I notice u have the mazdaspeed...is that just the muffler or the axle-back? either way, bigger piping from the turbo back always helps

My exhaust is just an axleback. I'm planning on getting a turbo back setup soon, just not sure which yet. I still want to be able to pass emissions here.

simply stated, overkill the fuel system. 440 injectors, fuel pump, APEXi S-AFC to name a few. If you don't overkill the fuel system, your going to be cussing the day you put the turbo on when you experience detonation and you blew your motor. Be careful and know what your getting yourself into before you do it.

Current mods:
Spool Stage 1 T3
2 1/2 turbo back exhaust (straight pipe)
APEXi S-AFC
EGT
A/F Gauge
GC adjustable coilovers (currently dropped 3 inches)
5% tint all the way around (except windshield)
CAI
And a bunch of other s***

Speaking from experience, don't push 9psi without forged internals, those rod bolts like to let go.

It wasn't pretty.

Wow...I hadn't considered what all I need to do to the fuel system, hosnestly I don't know much about it. I knew about beefing up the rods. I would like to safely be able to boost in the over 10 psi, without messing up my car.

do you have an IC with your stage one spool kit? (sorry with the thread jack)

I would suggest forged pistons and rods and get pistons of the same compression as stock. also, upgrade the injectors and at least an aux fuel pump so you're not running a high duty cycle with the turbo kit (and especially if you tune it and increase boost)

also, definitely have a back up vehicle, or buy a cheap beater. Just in case. When I blew my engine, I had to borrow friends and family members cars - it sucked.

I always thought that the APEXi S-AFC didnt work with the protege ECU, mind explaining how you got it to work?

paul, I hooked it up properly (correct ecu inputs) I posted in a thread a while back that I believe was titled S-AFC works. look up that thread and all the info should be there. BTW it does work fine.

maximum boost by corkey bell, kinda old but has all the basics in it. library should have it or you can buy it from amazon.com for about $25.
