Tire wear....problem?!?!

I was washing down my P5 the other day and I noticed that the middle row of the tread on both of my front tires is completely gone. Everywhere else on the tire is just fine.

I took the car to the dealers, they checked the alignment and tire pressure and said both were fine. The tech there suggested I contact the tire manufactures (these are the stock tires) and have them check for a slipped belt. Is it really possible that a slipped belt would cause identical wear on both front tires???

Also the tires have been rotated front to back twice and the car has 8500 miles on it.

Any suggestions????

Do you drive a manual? It may be a problem with the clutch/gas/foot interface. Improper sync between the three can cause excessive front tire wear. But on a serious side, I do believe they should last longer than that, even driving them agressively.

I really don't think its a problem with the shifting at all. Maybe for the first couple of days until I was used to the clutch. I've had manual cars for the past 11 years.

The odd thing about this is the fact that it is just the single middle band of tread that is missing. I would think even if I were driving very aggresively, doing burnouts, etc. the tire wear would be spread across the whole tire and not the middle band.

Have u thought about getting new wheels and tires or are u just gonna work with the factory's for a while?..Just a question.:p

If it were on only one tire then I would say it may have been caused by a belt separation or something. You would typically feel a belt separation as a low speed wobble in the steering wheel. Being that both are worn the same way and it's in the middle I would have to rule out an alignment problem. Probably both the tires were either overinflated or they were being spun a lot. An alighnment problem is going to show abnormal wear on the inner or outer edge of the tire, never the middle. The tires may have been at the correct pressure when the dealer checked them but may not have been all other times.

The only thing that comes to my mind is overinflation. But if the dealer said the tire pressure was fine then I'm at a loss.

Dude i have EXACT SAME problem. The center tread is all gone. It's not over inflation cuz i have a gage and i always verify it. I dunno what's the problem, but im sure it has nothing to do with the clutch/gas thing stated in an earlier post. I will have my dealer to verify that at my next oil change.
