Tire Pressure

When Mazda still had the specifications for the MP3 on their webpage, it indicated that proper inflation for the tires should be 32psi front and 27psi rear. Is everyone sticking to that? It does seem a bit unusual to have that much of a difference between front and rear. Maybe RcaingBeat had something to do with it?

i follow the information that is on the tires itself...which is 50psi if i remember correctly...front and rear

I myself stick to what the manual says. 31 front, 29 rear. I wouldn't even dream of putting 50 in those tires... my daily commute is bumpier than hell- lotsa construction that has made the rds very uneven, plus the combination of salt, ice, and stiff suspension would mean dangerous driving conditions for myself if I ran that much air in those tires. I like to keep em on the pavement... maybe a little more in better conditions, but for now I'll keep it where it is. I may be wrong, but I think I had a slip of paper issued by Dunlop that said something about running the tires to the car mfg's specs(which would make sense from a legal standpoint), but don't quote me!

Here ya go, I just pulled this off of Dunlop's website:
Always maintain inflation pressure at the level recommended by the vehicle manufacturer as shown on the vehicle placard or in the owner's manual. Higher inflation pressure increases stiffness which may deteriorate ride and generate unwanted vibration.

Tire footprint and traction are reduced when van, pickup or RV tires are overinflated for the loads carried. In particular, tires with aggressive tread patterns may contribute to oversteer or "roadwalk" if inflated beyond the inflation pressure specified in the owner's manual and vehicle placard for standard or customary loads. Overinflation also increases the chances of bruise damage.

I know what ya mean Kep, I got a nail in one of my tires, so I started looking through my manual. Before I did this I inflated the tire to 50psi, just like the tire says- and then I checked all of the pressures on the rest and was like- WOOOOOH! something is not right here. That's how I finally found out the proper pressures... now I've been checking them like every two weeks or so.

the p5 tire pressures are 32 front and back. the mp3 seems unusual. i can't remember ever having a car with different pressures front and back.

the p5 is that way because the rear is heavier than our mp3's and there is a split because of the suspension we have and how stiff the rear sway-bar is. I found that raising rear air pressure the car tends to get the rear to kick out. (only under high corning loads. like during auto-x.)

Do *NOT* inflate your tire to what is listed on the tire's sidewall. This is the MAXIMUM pressure the tire can handle. You always want to be below this due to the fact that as you drive, your tires heat up and more heat = more pressure.

Tire pressure effects the handling characteristics of the car. I would go with what Mazda says to run, not the MAX on the tire.

You'll probably find that car handles and rides better at the tire pressure reccomended by Mazda.

i have the tires at the specified psi in the manual...cant say i like the feeling too well...feels too mushy now...gonna put a few more psi in till i get it feeling the way i like

Well i work at Discount Tire Co. and i have checked my cars tires out often since ive ran over 2 nails in the past two weeks. the tire CAN handle 50 psi and ride will be terrible if you inflate them to that pressure. i keep mine between 35 and 42 psi depending on how im planning on driving. also underinflating your tires will cause tread wear on the outside and your tires will go fast. i personally would keep them at least at 35 psi. not 29 psi on summer only performance tires.

PS if anyone ever has any questions about tires and brands of tires and anything else about wheels or tires just ask me i can more than likely answer it.

Yeah I can get the rear to rotate a little when I autocross by inflating between 40-42 psi. Which can be desireable in autocross. I think the difference between front and rear pressure has to do with the heavy weight in the front and light in the rear with the additional stiffness created with the sway bars. I would think the P5 has a heavier rear end than the MP3. Does it have a longer wheelbase as well? I think it's kinda nice that our cars respond so well to small changes in tire pressure. It help "tune" the ride without having to do any real mechanical type stuff. That makes it easy to make adjustments when you're on grid for autocross.

Same question with a twist...What about snow/winter tires? Go with the sidewall or what?
