The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) activated on my 2 this morning...it was a very interesting experience. One of the rights of passage here in the northern climes like Indiana is the need to drop tire pressure in the summer as the temperature rises and to add air in the winter as the temperature drops. It has been running in the mid-90s F recentlywith lows in the 70s F. As is typical in Indiana, we go from summer like conditions to fall like conditions in a day. I had not yet added air for the fallas it has been unusually warm of late.

So this morning the temperature was 45F. So as the wife and I jumped in the 2 to head off to workwe backed out of the driveway and started out of our neighborhood. When we had travelled about 20 yards from the driveway10 to 15 mph maxthe TPMS light on the instrument cluster came on and a chime sounded. So I stopped the car and got out to look at the tires (which I always give a cursory look before starting out from being parked).and none of the tires looked obviously low.

So I turned around and when back to the driveway and got my tire gauge.and not surprisingly...given the temperaturefound that the tires registered 27 in the front (should have been 32I am running the factory tires)and 25 in the rear (should have been 30).

SoI cranked up the compressor and brought all four tires up to specs. During this adventure I had shut the engine off (at these gas pricescant let her idle unnecessarily). So when I started the engine againthe TPMS light was still onand I backed out of the driveway to head to workand within 20 yards the TPMS had reset and the light went off.

A very interesting experiencemy first car with a TPMSand I must sayI am very pleased that the 2s have this handy feature.

My wife's 5 always freaks out with the tpms icon when the cooler mornings start to hit in the fall (already in ohio) even though no tires are low enough where you can physically tell..and once you start driving and the tires heat up, it quickly goes back to an acceptable value and the light will go off...its normal...just add a little air so in the mornings it wont go off.

Whats funny is when I took off my wheels from the 2 and replaced with non tpms wheels\tires for my autocross racing, the light never even came on ;-)

It is something like 25% of recommended tire pressure. At 30 PSI normal, the TPMS will activate when a tire drops below 23-24 PSI roughly. At 32 factory, 8 PSI delta is 25% and the system will issue a warning at 24 psi.

Thanks for the clarification Joker...sounds like it functioned per specs then. I had kind of figured that it might activate around 5 pounds low or so. As my driving is all around town...I am rarely above 40 mph :( so it wasn't a big deal safety wise...but the ride certainly was more firm after bringing the air back up to the recommended pressures.

Mine went off this morning too. Lowest pressure was 27 per my gauge. I bumped the all up to 35 since it is only going to get colder.

Indeed John....my compressor has had a lazy summer...but that is over till spring at this point....adding air will be a biweekly right of passage for the foreseeable future. :)

Wow 2 members one from my old hometown and one from the state I just moved from (Indiana), I switched out my tires and rims and the valve stems don’t fit so they had to take my sensors out sadly.

LOL +++ happened to my sister last night around midnight when she got out of work. I though she had a flat tire but they just needed air because it got cold. All front were 27 and the back were 25. LOL. There is no PSI stamp on her driver door. Nobody stamped anything. So I guess it's 32 front / 30 back.

Interesting...5 pounds low...just like my experience. Yes...the sticker on my 2...which is on the center pillar between the two doors facing out to the side of the car in the center of the pillar...I didn't see it at first glance....has pressure listed as 32 front and 30 rear.

I'm definitely glad I found this thread. My TPMS light came on a while back (just needed some extra air) and ever since, I've watched the pressure like a hawk. I've heard all different answers for the amount of air to put in and I'm glad I now have the right numbers (32 front/30 rear). Why I didn't check the sticker on the car is beyond me but I'm glad I now know, lol.

I am going to have to get off my duff and check mine again...or I will have a repeat performance one of these mornings. I haven't added air since mid September...and now at the end of October....those morning temperatures are down another 15 degrees...there was a heavy frost this morning...and the bird bath was frozen over. (boom06)

Before TPMS I checked my pressures every time I did an oil change or 4 times a year.

I check my air at least once per month and the first day below 40, mine went off. Cold, windy and 5am in the morning...the warning doesn't sound once but continues to annoy at intervals. Way too annoying for my commute so back to the house to air up all 4 tires. They were at 26 or 27psi though they didn't look low even on the fronts which carry the weight.

i live in Chino, CA and it gets to the high 30's to mid 40's at night in the winter and mine went off...i haven't checked the pressure yet due to the fact that the light usually goes off in the afternoon when i leave work and the temperature is in the 70's
