tiptronic tranny probs

this may be just a fluid prob, but i dunno
my protege5 started slipping from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd into 3rd
then when we got off of the highway, its started slowing down without me touching the brakes and the AT light came on and started flashing, so i pulled off, turned the car totally off, and drove home
no AT light on the way home but its still slipping badly and started to smell like burnt clutch
i check the tranny fluid last week and it was fine
any suggestions?

it has over 60000, but i got a new engine and tranny at 35000 thanks to some bad gas
so about 25000-ish on the new engine/tranny

hmmm well if its a new engine then your mileage should be right around where you'd wanna look into changing the tranny fluid. All that aside, do you drive it hard?

yeah, it usually gets drove pretty hard....
maybe its finally time for a 5-speed swap

Its probably your torque converter. Hard driving can wreak havoc on a auto tranny. I would change the tranny fluid and get it looked into if you have any further problems.

A 5 speed swap is a complete PITA from what I've seen around here.

put in new tranny filter, gasket and changed fluid
but now the tranny's worse than ever!
the halfshaft shakes when you move the wheel
and it doesnt want to go into gear now
AHHHHHH

the AT keeps flashing -> electrical prob?

I know you said you changed the engine and tranny but are you sure about the tranny? If you had a bad gas tank and you blew your engine I do see why they would change the tranny. Just double checking, cause it might just be your fluid, we can only hope.

i took the car to mazda and they are going to put in a brand new tranny
also the car is up for sale when i get it back
plus some turbo items for it
