Timing belt noise?

1995 Mazda Protege DX
HI Everyone!

I just had the timing belt changed on my 1995 protege 1.5 dx. Ever since then, I hear a higher pitch whine when accelerating, especially in 1st gear. Do I need to be worried about it having been installed correctly?

Thanks in advance!

If you just had it done, I'd take it back and have the mechanic listen to it.

I did. I asked him whether he had made the belts too tight. He told me that the Duralast timing belt that I had provided was a little wider than OEM, although it still had the correct fit. He said he had to stretch it a little, whatever that means, and that the sound would go away in a week or two. Does that sound right?

I was going to go back and have him replace my fuel filter, so I'll have him reevaluate then.

BTW, how important is it to change the fuel filter? I looked through the maintenence records of my newly purchased car, which go back to the original purchase. Don't see it ever being changed.

Yes, give it a week or two to see if it dissipates.

Regarding your fuel filter: If it's never been done, you should change it. For fuel injected engines, you typically need to remove the pump fuse, first and then crank the starter to release fuel pressure in the line. Otherwise, it'll spray some fuel when you disconnect the line from the filter.
