time for my 2500mile oil change

first change?

have fun getting the sucker off, i hope you have a good strap wrench. :D

my first filter was on so tight that i ended up bending the $&!t out of it to get it off.

have fun!

na, this is my forth change, first was at 575, second at 1000 (changed to synthetic) next at 2500, then at 5000, now at 7500 (tryin the bigger filter)

seein if i can fit 4 qrts instead of 3.7, just don't like wasting .3 quarts, and about the frequency, i get the oil free and im just anal about it, i have a theory on changing oil, i don't have time now, but i could go into detail later

Synthetic can go a little over 3k.

And I doubt changing your oil early has any performance gains at all, unless you are running a big setup and you need to change out the oil frequently. But on a lightly modded protege(like mine and maybe yours) 3k is fine to change oil.

s*** get the oil for free and sell it on the side lol.

haha, we,ll im goin to autoshop right now to change it, i'll explain my theory in more detail later and see how hard it is to get the filter in

Jeez what a waste of oil! When I used to work at Jiffy Lube I changed mine more frequently, but not THAT much. And that was with free Mobil 1. (It's amazing how much oil is left in a quart bottle after you pour it out quickly)

you don't need to change synthetic oil every 3k miles...

bimmers go up to 15k miles between oil changes...

Yeah true on that 15k mark, but I try to change it once every4.5k or 5k.

No offense to him, but I doubt his theory would hold water :).

PS I think we all used to have "theories" before we learned the truth about things lol.

dont think you can do the same with your japanese car.

the funny thing is that german do built their car the different way.

do you know that the newer bimmer have a sealed tranny? the atf should outlast the life of the car, i dont know how well that concept works but it's totally new things to me. ;)

and on the audi, you have to remove the front windshield if you need to replace your heater core.

i change my syn. oil every 3k, new fitler and everything.

Here is my old stock size filter next to my new 626 v6 OEM filter(thumb)

It went it with absolutly no problems at all and i put 4 quarts in instead of 3.7:D

and now for my theory, feel free to express your opinions on it just don't (flame2)

So basicly, here it is, all of a car engine parts rely on oil to maintain movement and to provide cooling. Suggested oil changes range from 3-5k with normal oil and 4-6k with synthetic i believe. That is under normal driving conditions. I, however, drive my car fairly hard, higher rpm, more changes, etc, then and average driver so i would imagine that my oil breaks down a little faster and gets more mucked up in less chassis milage, however my total engine revolutions is much higher then that of a "normal driver" cuz i rev higher for longer etc. So my engine goes through more of a workout then an average engine, and oilchanges are a relativly inexpensive way to help insure better ware on parts over time. Having cleaner oil may help prevent plugged lines or ware on parts from dirt in the oil and likely lubricates better.

A good way to find out the credibility of this is look at race cars, how often do they change their oil? Most likely they change it frequently, the run high rpms for an extened period of time.

well, there ya go, opinons?

okay, that's basic stuff, you can look at it like that.

let me ask you guys a question, what is the number one reason to change the oil in the first place?

i'll throw in a hints, it's not that the oil is getting dirty
