Hey guys just thought i would run it by you lads first....

so here it is, it's seems to me that when i accelerate my p5 once the tach shows the engine at about 2200rpm i can begin to hear a odd ticking sound that seems to be out of place from that of the normal sounds.....the vehicle has nothing to fancy to it yet, just an injen long ram and thats it. now it is the tiptronic model but the ticking will occur in manual or auto and it occurs through all four gears.

any suggestions? thanks

bump, anyone have any ideas. It starts at around 2200 rpm, ticks faster as rpm's rise, and then disappears at around 3500rpm's. Car is stock.

Most likely valvetrain ticking, which is normal....If you want to fix it you would have to have the valve sleeves replaced, but it is not really an issue to be worried about.

The easiest fix is to add about 1/2 quart extra oil, it will burn off faster than at normal oil levels, but can also reduce the valvetrain chatter noise...

If the noise turns into a machine gun sound, LOUD...stop driving..you lost a intake butterfly screw and your engine will be toast...You will know this noise when you hear it, so don't start freaking out...

I not sure that adding extra oil is a good idea. Correct me if I am wrong but, when you have to much oil in your oil pan it causes the oil to froth and proper lubrication does not happen.

Well...Just make sure the oil is 100% at all times then...

ENGINE CLICKING NOISES

A clicking or tapping noise that gets louder when you rev the engine is probably "tappet" or upper valvetrain noise caused by one of several things: low oil pressure, excessive valve lash, or worn or damaged parts.

First, check the engine dipstick to see if the oil level is low. If low, add oil to bring it back up to the full mark. Is the engine still noisy? Check your oil pressure. A low gauge reading (or oil warning light) would indicate a serious internal engine problem that is preventing normal oil pressure from reaching the upper valvetrain components. The cause might be a worn or damaged oil pump, a clogged oil pump pickup screen or a plugged up oil filter. Using too thick a viscosity of motor oil during cold weather can also slow down the flow of oil to the upper valvetrain, causing noise and wear.

I had the same noise in my old car and the valve tapets(?) had to be adjusted.

thanks guys that really seems to set me in the right direction....figured it had something to do with the valve train, do any of you know if its common amongst 2.0L

i know this tread is old but just so you guys know a ticking noise just means u need to have ur valves adjusted ....and that is the case 95% of the time
