I have a coworker who has a 91 awd protege and it makes a ticking noise he and his mechanic have no idea... the mechanic wants to try and find a junk yard head and swap it out to see if it goes away. are there common issues that this engine has that he should no about? is it something simple? any help is appreciated

thanks guys

is the 1.8l in the protege the same as an escort from the same time? 90-94? that may help him locate a junk head to change out...

hopefully some one can answer this question for me

(bump) for anything?? or maybe a site that has some active 1/2gen people to help my coworker out?? its a nice car i would hate to see it die like this.

If the Protege has a 1.8 BP engine, being the one with the DOHC (Dual Over Head Cam) then the one from a Ford Escort GT(only) will work. If it's the SOHC (S for single / non-BP) then no Escort one will work. Well, I think you can also use the GT head on it but I think there's extra work involved so let's just leave that option out. Chances are the car is a SOHC(I can't recall what engine is on the AWD) so forget the Escorts.

Its the lifters
I had an escort Gt and me friends have them still (one with a GT-R).
and all the bp do it. it sht elifters. there is a way to take them apart and clean them to help stop it. or you run a quiet stop additive and keeps them quiet. I used to use Lucas oil. and replace ti with oen fo my quarts of oil. Was more money but i wouldnt have any noise for 3000-4000 miles afte rthe oil change. just when the oil gets old and week it would make it. I ran fo r3 years that way(till i hydrolocked themotor). my next motor did it a bit then stopped with valvoline oil i used. and my friends GT-x motor did it for awhile after we installed it. then it wen taway.

But none of us swapped the head, and its usually just th elifters.
