Ticking/chattering noise from motor?

Ok take off passenger wheel take off wheel well take off belts alt, ps/ac take off crank pulley, locate all 10mm bolts holding on timing covers upper and lower sounds like its either the idler pulley for timing belt or tensioner pulley if thats the case just get a new timing belt and tensioner pulley and spring and idler pulley and always change water pump at same time as timing belt since your in their. oh yeah you might have to take off water pump pulley to get lower cover off.

Surgery was fine, I just can do anything that requires me to do physcal strain till after I see that dr. next week!! It sucks being home for a week and cant do anything that needs to be done... oh wel gotta get well first.... IF I was to remove the passenger fender wheel lining would help me see more or get more access?

takeing off the fener is way to much work, just take off your wheel and youll have plenty of room to work with...

Driver X, I removed my motor and trans, But i didnt take it apart. I dont have all the tools to rebuild a motor so I sent it to my friend. But heres the problem, even if I removed the head, I still might not have noticed that I bent 3 rods. If i removed the bottom end, i would have to take enough stuff off to see the rods to even know that it was my problem. I know you can get a motor for under $1,000 for our cars. If you have no luck with what your looking for, I would try dropping the oil pan. Then there is another cover, take that off and you should be able to see your connecting rods. Still, you may need to take apart each rod journal to check the bearings and the main bearings as well. Its gonna be quite a bit of work. Just make sure you torque everything back down by spec.

Maybe a quick compression check can help you diagnose this problem a little easier...Atleast it will give you an idea of what to look out for. I would figure that if your compression is good, you probably didn't bend any rods. You still could have bearing failure though.

well I finally got out there to look around to see whats up. I removed the bottom cover that allows you see the alternator and the compressor and the I think its called drive pully...anyhow the belt that goes to the alternator and the ac compressor has a fray piece that is unraveled but yet has a hard piece still attached to it. So everytime it goes around it hits something....making noise. I just changed the belt not that long ago...so I dont know what is going on here. I did notice how ever that the alternator puller has some build up in the pully grove closest to the alternator.... Attached is some pics of what I'm talking bout for the belt....

also what is those teeth/targets used for? I saw that there is prox sensor detecting each tooth but what is that used for???

That is the crank pulley. The ecu uses those teeth to control ignition timing. If you look there is one missing.

But I don't think the frayed belt is causing your problems.

I would pull out the spark plugs and check the cylinder for any dabri with a telescoping magnet before I would do any thing else, easy first step to take and that would elimenate that, and I would change that belt too, there could be some noise from that too. I would not run the engine till you find out what is wrong, you might damage it if there is something badly wrong with it. good luck and lets know what you find

so wait... how would u get that debris buildup off the groove in the pulley? maybe some Brakleen?
