Thoughts on Alpine CDA 9853 vs CDA 9855?

Ive learned from my last HU that the factory warranty is a must, and I won't sacrifice it for getting a better deal. My Kenwood's (shutter) ribbon cable died on me and it cost me almost 100 bucks out of pocket to get it fixed.
I've got a Clarion unit that has put in 8 years of faithfull service and the past year the lights and other things have stopped working on the face plate. I ordered the ribbon cable when I ordered my optical cable for a different head unit since it was only like $2 but I haven't gotten around to installing it. I'm guessing that some soldering will be involved. I figure if I break it in the process at least I got 8 years out of it. I'm guessing the cold winters in New England just wore it out.

There are firmware upgrades for the unit.. if you see a green and/or yellow dot sticker on the box you have the updated firmware and your good to go.

9855

i have the 9855 and I am really pleased. It looks really nice in the p5 with the buttons a perfect matching redish/orange and the white /black bio display. I actually like the glide touch now that ive gotten used to it. I deliver pizzas so i use it a hell of a lot as well. The sound quality is excelent.

Ditto on having the 9855, the display is alot nicer. I would pay the extra money just for that. It matches the p5's red perfectly and doesn't look retarded like the pixels in the 9853.

Also make sure you get the warranty for either of them, I had to replace mine a week after I installed it due to a faulty glide touch. The bar for some reason would stick without me touching it and would make the unit unresponsive. Some factory defect, the one I have now has been working great.

In regards to the cd not ejecting on some of the units, do a search on google. It is/was a known issue and has been addressed. I know when I was looking at the units, Alpine had designated the "working/unfaulty" units with a small circular sticker about the size of a nickle that is located on the side of the box.

Good luck with your choice.

Oh and btw, Firsty helped me greatly when I was deciding on the unit. Got it from Tweeters as per his suggestion for 390 plus warranty.

if you can pick up a 9835 on ebay... same display, same features, no glide touch. A+ in my book.

Hmm interesting, when I was lookin at them, I thought the 9835 had a different display.

Maybe I was thinking of the 9833....

getting ready to put the 9855 in,went to best buy and he matched crutchfields price 399.00, anyways I was reading the manual and there are quite a few colors, how far is the match for the P5's?

I leave my color set on 013, its between the red and amber presets. Looks close enough for me.

9855 rocks! I love mine, tons of control. Just takes a while to get use to the menus, slide bar, etc. Worth it in my opinion.

After you do all of the initial set up, the radio works beautifully. I suggest you take the time to measure the speakers and input the time correction into your radio as well. I have my radio set for driver, driver/passenger, driver/pass/rear left, driver/pass/rear right, and the last two user settings are just if the car is full. I love being able to use the remote and change things on the fly, although i wish the remote had a title button to change the display information. I give the radio 9/10 right now, although I haven't tried the iPod hookup yet.

I have been going to the alpine web site to I-personalize and checking out the settings and starting to get the set-up the way I want it so when it's ready I can download the info onto a cd-r and load it onto the system, way cool (thumb)

It's just as easy to program it through the car, and for the time correction, you have to actually measure the speaker distances and then look them up on the chart in the owners manual. I suggest this over the i-personalize because you can actually hear what changes youre making, instead of just pushing buttons on the cd. Make a CD with the most common settings in case you have to remove the unit or disconnect the battery, this way it will save you time of having to reset everything.
