Thoughts/advice on a new daily driver........

I have been going back and forth with things for a while around my next car, so I thought I might ask you guys for your thoughts around my next car purchase. Normally, I am very negative around Which car should I buy? threads on any forums, and generally feel that someone has to decide for themselves, but here I am.

Let me say, that I will be changing cars, regardless. I may keep my current GTI for another 10 months or so, but I am ready for another car right now. I simply want to start fresh with something and need a little change. Please don't simply say "keep your current GTI". I am going to change..........so here it is.

I currently have an 08 VW GTI (speed manual). Some of my previous cars were a 1987 Ford Mustang, 1998 & 2004 Nissan SE-R, 1990 Mazda RX-7, 2004 & 2007 Honda Civic Si, 2005, 2006, & 2007 Subaru WRX

I am currently looking at getting another car. I am looking for one that I will, hopefully, keep for around 80-100,000 miles, if not keep for a really long time after it is all paid off and make it a dedicated project car. The car will be my daily driver and will see, rain and snow, and crappy roads in MA. I am looking for it to offer me a connection to the driving experience. I value the drive and experience/joy of the man and machine connection over all else. With that said, it will have to be at home on the highway and the back roads, as my commute to work is 40 miles each way, and I usually do almost 100 miles a day in total. The car will not see any track or autox days, as I plan on getting a cheap fixer-upper/project car this winter to make into an autox car. I needs something that will excite my passion for cars days after day, yet still be able to drive day in, day out without a concern.

At this time, the cars I am looking at are new vehicles, as I dont want to be concerned around what someone else did to the car before me and I want the full warranty without having to add one myself for more $$$. I need to stay under or around $25,000. The cars that I have been spending my time thinking about are as follows: Subaru WRX, Mazdaspeed3, 2010 GTI (yes, I already have a GTI, but I like the new redesign and slight changes), Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Mazda RX-8 (with rebates and dealers wanting to move them, the price is well bellow $25K). I have also thought about the Mitsu Ralliart, but I would need an end of the model year sale to get it around my price range.

Well, there you have it. Thoughts and suggestions are welcome and appreciated. I know this is a Mazda site so there is bound to be a bias, but I think this is also pretty decent and diverse group of car enthusiasts and I would like to hear from you guys.

Thanks for any help.

Like you said this is a Mazda website and you could say I am biased but it's only because I haven't driven the other cars you were talking about so I can't say anything about them.

That being said. I do like my speed3, the hatchback is awesome for hauling stuff around, it will come in handy when I have a kid, with an easier access to the back seats. For now the power that comes with the car is more then sufficient for a daily driver.

I just passed 20k mark on it, bought it May 08. The only thing that went wrong with it was the Slave Cylinder broke, got it fixed under warranty with no problems at all.

The only mods I have are COBB intake, BPV, Turbo Inlet pipe, and yellow fogs. The dealer I go to has no problems with my mods.

Hopefully that gives you some info about the car.
Good luck with the hunt. Just find something that will fit your needs.

I would have to say out of your selections, go with the Subaru WRX or Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

My buddy has a 3.8L Genesis and it is a great and fast car. It hugs the road better than I could ever get my MS3 to and will pull it off the line easily. He has had no issues with his and he has 30 000km on it so far. My only issue with this car is the lack of a rear seat (i'm no

The only issues I am aware of with the Coupes exists with the 2.0L. They had rev-hang issues that were resolved by an ECU flash from the dealer under warranty.

With that being said, I found the 2.0L gutless and it seemed to require more shifts than even my MS3 to be fun in.

I think the Subaru WRX would suit your needs nicely. I just finished reading some reviews on the 2009+ and they are very promising. I found one site claiming 0-60mph figures of 4.7 seconds and another claiming 5.2 seconds. This car would be a blast to drive and would stick well in snow/rain and through the backroads.

Just my 2cents.

I know you said you're looking for a dependable daily driver, but from what I have gathered on this forum and other MS3 forums, the MS3 isn't the best choice if you think you might want to mod it heavily. Just throwing that out there. The modding path is somewhat limited, but you can still do a decent amount. Might want to read up on dependability issues if you do decide to go this route.

Seems like all of the cars you've had already that you would've settled on one already - especially since the '04 Si. You have had some of the better daily drivers available as far as a good combination of fun and comfort. For some reason I don't see you holding on to the MS3 for 80-100K...simply because you'll grow tired of it after you realize the modding scene is limited when compared to the Subaru.

Now for me, personally, the MS3 was the perfect fit since I had come from six years of constantly modding my '02 WRX. I wanted something that was more plush and easier to live with daily. Minor bolt-ons and cosmetic mods are the extent of what I have been doing and all I'll be doing for the remainder of my ownership - however long that may be.

you posted on the other forum with the same post, and ill tell you again, go with the GTI, its much more refined than all the other cars, and with 500 bucks you can get a custom stage 1 tune or "chip" and your at 350HP @ 390TQ

for a daily driver, I'd suggest either the WRX or Ralliart. The Ralliart is not as quick, but out of the bunch, it the best DD, cost aside. Has a 100k warranty, awesome transmission, larger interior and AWD. Also has really great tech features and sound system if you go for those options, which I would suggest. I am not a fan of Mitsu-service, BUT if you are keeping it stock until the warranty is done then no worries, they just aren't mod friendly at all during warranty. As far as a DD that will see snow, I wouldn't recommend any rwd car, especially 2doors.

:bs:

would require more supporting mods, and clearly not be warranty friendly.

How 'bout a "regular" 3 five-door? From what I've read, they're fairly frisky and should be reliable enough.

I want what he's on :)

To go from 207ft-lb to 390 with just a tune? WOW thats impressive gains.

Jesus Christ, man! That's like when you were ten and mom told you to go ahead and get the store brand of Cap'n Crunch cause it tasted the same. No, no no!

LOL. Good stuff.

For a pure DD with less sportiness (and no manual tranny *YUCK*), I would say Ralliart.

For a more sporty car that is definitely year round capable and a bit more sporty IMO I would say the WRX.

uhm. u seem to change your car every year... why? LOL

Hell, I've never kept anything more than 3 years. It's gonna take me about 3 to pay off the 3, and then I'll have to decide if I want to keep her as my only car, get a second car, or sell her and get something else. A 3.8L Genesis coupe does look tempting- I hope Hyundai puts telescoping steering in that damn car soon!

Not sure if I'm going the turbo route again. Boost does feel good, but I think in the future I'll stick with V6 or V8 and get my torque from mechanically simpler engines. (drive2)

I live in MA as well so I can understand concerns regarding the weather and roads. I'd highly recommend the MS3 as I have never been this happy with a car before, having driving Honda, Toyota, and Nissans. I'd recommend a 2009 MS3 as opposed to the newer models, as it will help you stay under the radar (it looks like a plain old car, but has tons of kick). Keep in mind you will definitely need to invest in winter tires as well.

I would also recommend trying out a WRX,, that's one car that I've never driven but has always sounded very appealing.

Get a 09 WRX. Lots of deals right now. I'm in CA, but DD in 4 season state make WRX better choice.I had a modded 02 WRX, 350Z, and 07 GTI. MS3 is more raw than WRX and certainly GTI but that what I like. Few bolt-on mods on WRX and you'll blow the Genesis away. The suspension on that thing is way too soft though.
