Thinking of getting a Mazda5

So, we're thinking of getting a Mazda5. We test drove a Sport 5MT just to see how the MT felt. The clutch was smooth like butter compared to mine in the Pro5 and the MSP. We tried out the other seats, and they were comfortable, even the 3rd row wasn't bad.

I just saw the list of updates for the 08 model and nothing seems to have changed for the Touring model. I really want the sunroof, so won't settle for the Sport, and want the 5MT, so won't get the GT.

So, Mazda5 community. Tell me what else to look for. What are your gripes? What are you praises?

I have owned mine for 6 months now. My recent rides were a volkswagen passat, a caddilac CTS, and a subaru legacy. by far, the 5 is the most practical vehicle...hands down. I have 12k on it now. being well used. interior is great, functional and good looking. I have to very minor gripes...1. the gas and brake pedals are very close together, when I drive with certain shoes on my foot hits the brake when im going to the gas pedal. 2. the steering wheel is not quite low enough even in the lowest position. other than that..the car is 100% fun to drive. looks great, handles great. The wife and I have decided to forgo a motorcycle and get a mazdaspeed 6 for a "playtoy" and keep the 5 for her commuter. I own a 07 F150 as my primary ride. so the speed6 will be a sunny day no winter duty rig...can't wait. Mazdas are great!...

I own a 2007 Mazda5 Grand Touring. Probably one of the best cars I have ever owned. Before my first oil change I drove it from Chicago to Denver and back with wife, child and a full load of cargo. Gas mileage was above what was listed, the navigation system was surprisingly helpful, the ride was very comfortable and the engine did well in the mountains. It cruises, my wife found out to my chagrin, at 100mph for long straights quite well :(

I routinely haul five or six people around in it, engine blocks to and from Fedex, stacks of cold air intakes or headers with the AC on full blast and it never skips a beat. Keep in mind now that you need to have certain expectations with this car. Its a 3300 lb vehicle with a 160hp engine. its easily a good 500 lbs heavier than a mazda3 with the same engine. On a good day it would probably run a high 16s quarter mile time and i'd not autocross it if someone paid me a gazillion dollars to do so. Its a vehicle with a clear purpose and manual transmission or not, that needs to be kept in mind when considering it. I had no expectations of a race car when I bought it and still don't.

That said, the 5 is alot of fun for what it is. It corners well, accelerates decent, rides smooth and gets a lot of looks. I didn't want a truck or a minivan or a full size van, but I did want something that could haul alot of s*** while not getting drunk at the fuel pump. There really isn't anything other than this or a Kia Rondo (ugh) that can really do all that with the same characteristics. I often finding myself driving it alot harder than I probably should be, because to a point the car encourages it if that makes any sense. I've never met one person who has been unimpressed with it. My sister just bought a Jeep Commander and commented that the seats in the 5 were better and she dropped her jaw when I told her what kind of mileage it got next to the Commander.

I bought a GT because there were literally no manual transmissions to be found anywhere. I would have flown to California and driven one back if there had been one. There was not even one on special order or in the production queue when i bought mine. After driving the GT, I figured I could deal without the manual transmission and I don't really regret it. The price was right and its relaxing in Chicago style or suburb style traffic to just not have a clutch to deal with sometimes. I have other cars for that.

Not to tempt you either, but the car is more or less a stretched 3. Virtually every modification from the 3 will transfer over. Intakes, headers, motor mounts, springs, shocks, etc all swap on as if they were made for the car. I just welded a factory Mazdaspeed3 exhaust to the car and it sounds utterly asinine "for a van" I am told.

My gripes are few. More power would always be nice. Throttle response off the line is a little subdued for me. Bigger brakes would be real nice when you have a full load. The ones from the Mazdaspeed3 do fit soooooooo.......yeah, maybe down the line ;) Factory roof rails like on the Protege5 would have been real nice too.

Other than that, its a great car and I'd buy it again given the chance. The 07 to 08 changes were of little signifigance to me, but I know a few owners are up in arms about it. Besides, 2007 brown leather PWNZ 2008 black leather on a hot day :D

Does the Mazda5 have a telescoping steering wheel along with the tilt? I have a Mazda6 with it and it sure is nice to have to get in that perfect driving position.

We love our 5. Just the right size, easy to maneuver, all the room we need and none that we don't. Drives brilliantly, handles well, gets great gas mileage considering what it can do. It's rare so people still do double-takes.

Gripes are few, nothing major. Compared with the Protege, I find room in the driver footwell surprisingly tight. Outboard armrests on the middle seats would be nice, but that's fixed for '08. A/C is adequate, not great, and even after eight years the Protege's A/C works better than the 5's, although the Protege's doesn't have as much work to do. The interior is well assembled, but the quality of the materials are pretty cheap, and definitely cheaper than the Protege's. Center of gravity is higher, takes a little getting used to if you're used to a Protege.

Not primary driver but owner of one for 2+ years. First Mazda and worth every mile, even with the early recall headaches (no worries, long ironed out). Real fun to drive, a really good inheritance from the MZ3. Low maintenance cost (even when servicing it at the dealer). The 5MT, compared to my Honda, it has much more accurate gear-RPM ratio.

You can get a Sport trim with sunroof, fogs, 6CD changer and some other amenities found in the Touring, but if you find a 5MT Touring, just go for it. Where I live 5MT was very hard to find (even for a Sport, which is the one I found w/MT), but it may be a different story down in GA.

what kind of recalls were there?

Only affected early 06s I believe (bought mine ~Jul/Aug 05).

Here is what comes to mind:
  • Exhaust could catch fire, LOL. It seems that somebody with AT got it stuck in 2nd gear (manual mode) for an extended period of time at high RPMs and the hot exhaust burned the bumper (or something like that). I have a 5MT so I just laughed, but since wife is primary driver I sent it to dealer just in case
  • Freezing sliding door latches (it mostly affects Northern US and Canadians of course)
  • Noisy/squeaky suspension on cold weather (nothing has happened on my case, but some forum members have posted complaints).

Some of the service bulletins are here. All seemed ironed out, no probs.

Great for what it's designed for. We put 3 kids in, and have even managed a full cart of Costco groceries at the same time.

I have the manual 5-speed. I added an auto-dimming comapass mirror and rear bumper guard along with some after-market wheels and tires. I still need to get my tint on.

Most are happy with the auto tranny. Personally, I will never get another FWD 4-cyl (transversely mounted) vehicle with an auto... ever again. I've had too many problems with vibrations at idle while in "D".

our 06 auto touring has treated us very well. we had a bit of a gas mileage problem, but i replaced the air filter and it's been a lot better. it's very easy to load my daughter into her car seat and we can fit a ton of stuff inside of it. one of the most practical cars i've ever owned. i like that the 08 has a passenger arm rest. the other updates seem pretty nice, too.

i'm 6'0" and sat in the 3rd row seat to see how tight it was. it's not the most spacious seat, but if i had to, i could ride back there with no problem. hell, my friends back seat in his 01 maxima was more snug.

no regrets with this vehicle at all.

my mazda 5 is my first car, love it alot, surely beats the other "hot" options for young ones lol. really practical for a guy living away from home.

When were you in Denver last? What color is your 5?

We have an '06 Touring 5MT. It's a great car and we love it. My only gripe is the angle of the front-seat headrests. They push my head too far forward (yeah, I have a fat head) and make my neck ache so on a longer drive I turn my headrest around backwards.

We've taken our 5 on long trips with the kids and STUFFED full of other crap, and it does a wonderful job. The sliding rear doors are absolute gold. Anyone who purposely makes a vehicle of this type with traditional rear doors ought to go out of business; the sliders are the only way to go. I'd like to put a hitch on it to carry a cargo box (if we ever need or want the space), but we haven't really needed one yet. We've found the A/C to be completely adequate even in Phoenix.

There are always wishes one has (i.e. I sure love the power of the turbo 4 in my Subaru Baja, but like the 5's mpg better), but overall the only thing I'd truly pay more for would be a DISI engine (doesn't need to be a turbo, just direct injection) or a turbo diesel.

In case anyone in CA is reading this thread, Lancaster Mazda in Lancaster, CA still shows they have MT Sports in stock. This is the only place in CA (that I know of) that shows MT in stock.

kinda random, but I use to live close to Lancaster in Palmdale.

not sure about the mazda side of the lancaster dealership, but the guys at the suby side were really nice. if i still lived in that area, we would've bought our 5 there.

On the MT front, one of the local dealers, Bass Mazda, just outside of Cleveland, OH, has one Sport MT and one Touring MT on their lot.

If we decide to purchase, we'll probably have to special order one and wait on it....does Mazda even do that?
