Thinking about buying protege garage intake mani..

Just wondering If this manifold it worth it? Ive only found one decent thread about the manifold being well worth the money but something about cold start bogging issues? Also... If I do plan on buying it, what all is needed for install? or is it a direct swap?

I got one and think it was money well spent. Not sure how many horses because I have not dyno'd since putting it in but you can certainly feel the difference. As far as the install I don't know because I had a shop do it for me.

I think there is a dyno floating around that it made a 17 WHP increase..... so if this is true it is the best bolt on you can buy for the money. only problem is i think that it makes you delete the EGR so it will cause a CEL. Im not sure if there is a way around that or not...

Edit.... The 17 WHP increase was with minor bolt on mods. So it was some major power.

You'll need to buy the 626 EGR tube, which Ken sells, to avoid the CEL. The cold start issues are just with people not letting the car warm up enough, it'll take longer since there is no VTCS system with the 626 manifold. You'll want to replace the intake manifold and throttle body gaskets, and possibly the fuel injector orings if you're not careful when you swap them over.

When I got my car back from the shop it had the check engine light on but after asking Ken about it he told me to plug the two solenoids for VTCS and VICS back into the wiring harness. That took care of it.

Yeah I noticed on Kens site, that there is an option to have the EGR tube added with the intake mani. So other than that its a pretty direct swap?

It's a direct swap and well worth the money. Get the EGR tube and make sure to have a mental note of the vacuum line routing so you can keep everything close to stock when you have it in. It'll help to have a 27mm (correct me if I'm wrong) crescent wrench to get the EGR off. That was the worst part of the process for me (took a half hour with a hack saw to do away with it). I suggest having some extra silicone hoses and varying connectors to replace the stock ones, too. It's also a great time to change the rear MM, too if you like since it'll slightly easier to get to that wiring harness. Be careful with the injector o-rings and have 1/4 ratchet with some extensions and a flex head and you should be good to go. First time took me about 4-5 hours over a three day span (after hurricane Wilma) to get everything smoothed out, but with all the tools and power back it only takes me about an hour and half to get it all done. LMK if you have any questions.

its actually my car on kens site w/ dyno info. Well worth it. Easy swap. Like already said, intake mani gasket and TB gasket. Do the rear motor mount also if your doing it yourself or even if your payin someone. Do it! Very impressed w/ benefits vs cold starts.

Cool, sounds like its gonna be purchased.. and I already have all motor mounts done, RR racing inserts front and rear, and the AWR side motor mounts.

Sorry to thread jack but how does your car ride with all the mounts upgraded... and whats the idle vibrations like?

Hmm well the car idles fine, a slight hummm in the interior... but when you turn on the ac boy it does vibrate like mad. And on the interstate it tends to drone some because of the exhaust I have.

.. Mine's been purchased for a few weeks. It's been sitting upstairs, waiting to be painted and installed. Damn my work schedule for never giving me a day to get anything done!

Anyhoo, since we're on the subject -- what else exactly are people saying to change out during the install? The rear motor mount, throttlebody gaskets, maybe fuel injector o-rings? Is is necessary to replace those, or just a 'might as well do it while you're in there' thing?

.. And where can I purchase those replacement parts? The throttlebody gaskets, fuel injector o-rings, and anything else anybody recommends?

hey. how dare you how dare me. i'd threaten to spank you but i don't think you should enjoy such a treatment by me. plus i haven't figured out how to spank anyone on the internet yet.

So I'm assuming that all of these dyno numbers are for a boosted car? Has anyone done this with a N/A? Does it help it or hurt it in the low end?

The TB and IM gaskets should be done. It might not be 100% necessary, but it's a cheap guard against leaks. The injector O-rings aren't really necessary either, but they break like fine china if you're not extremely careful, so it's a good idea to have extras on hand. The rear motor mounts easier when the manifold is off if you want to change it, but that is definetly an option.
