"Thermal" exhausts for P5 now in stock.

We've got a good stock of Thermal exhausts for the P5 now in stock. These are full, 2.25" cat-back systems (as opposed to the simple axle-back rear section used on the MP3) beautifully made from stainless steel. They sound good - not noisy or raspy - and should offer a decent power bump. We've tested a big power increase on a turbo car, but haven't had a chance to check on a stock one.

They won't fit the sedan, but those should be coming soon.

Apologies if this is the wrong forum, but I wanted to get the word out.

We're awaiting a prototype 2.5". Our suspiscion is that it may not make much of a difference at 8 psi, but the dyno will tell.

It could be that 2.25" is big enough to flow all the air necessary. I know it's more manly to have a 3" exhaust, but if you don't need it then it's just extra weight and extra money. 3" is definitely overkill for this application - we've seen a difference on a 300 hp Miata, but not on lesser ones.

But enough speculation, we'll test.

Is this true? DAMNIT!! I jus bought the 3" HKS Hi-Power exhaust.....spoolin this is what you have how does the 3" feel??

I think 3" is not needed unless you were going to go beyond "turbo kit" levels and on to a built motor/custom turbo setup.

I was once told that a 3" system is sufficient for a wide range of high horsepower applications (300-600+hp)...Don't quote me on anything...but the point is I think a 3" system isn't needed unless youre pushing serious power.

Lets see what the dyno says

Antoine is correct. The 3" is not NEEDED at low boost levels. There just isn't enough flow to justify a pipe that big. Most exhausts are sold on the "bigger is better" concept.

I would estimate, based on what we've seen with the Miata, that you'd need 15 psi before you saw any significant difference between a 2.5 and 3" system. We'll see what happens with a 2.5" on the 8 psi Proteg.

Those exhausts look nice! You guys should try to etch in a little decal in on the muffler tip. Kind of like the MazdaSpeed/Racing Beat one. I kind of like suttle advertising, and Flying Miata is definitely a company I wouldn't mind having a logo from :).

Now that I think of it, I'm not sure how well "Flyin Miata" would look on a Protege :D ...

Chris
lol, I was just about to say that...
but "Thermal FM protege" would be ok.....FOR A RICER!!!!:D :D :D

sorry, i just love doing that

"FM protege" might not be bad

The tips are engraved, actually, It's subtle, but Thermal is on the tip.

Spoolin', I'm surprised you got so much of an increase. Where there other changes in the exhaust system besides the tubing diameter? As I said, we saw no power increase in a 15 psi 1.8l Miata between 2.5" and 3", same exhaust/muffler manufacturer.

Yes I was surprised myself,
The only difference was the muffler. Switching from an apexi N-1 to the HKS. Both units have the same design though. The downpipe was the same 2.5 for both tests
