Just for reference. I want you all to know that Mazda have already done an RX-9. From 1978-1981

In "General issue" countries the export version of the LA43S Luce was called the RX-9.

Yes, that is awesome. Haha I would have never know they already made one of those. Thanks for posting it.

Sounds like if someone had a question on whether or not Mazda actually made an RX-9, you've nailed the coffin shut, buried that b**** with dynamite inside, and blew that sh!t to smitherines.

Kudos!

So, was the car sold with a piston engine as the 929L and with the rotary as the RX-9, or were both names used with the rotary?

Just wondering.

Also, when I think "RX-7...RX-8...RX-9..." that thing is a huge disappointment for the 9! ;)

Guys think of it this way.

Late 70's

Mazda wanted to get into their stride for naming their range. make it easy to understand the rotary/piston versions of the same car.

The RX-6 / 626 was about to happen.(then the rotary version was canned)
The RX-9 / 929 was named to for export purposes

And............ on a related matter, just to mess with your heads. The Eunos Cosmo was going to be an "RX-8" if it got exported. Mazda actually made the badges for the car as the export decision was pulled right at the 11th hour.

Thanks for posting those great pics, that is the first one I have seen.

While looking in the junkyards years ago, I also remember seeing the mazda 808, and the 616.

(ohsnap!) I remember seeing that mentioned somewhere but didn't know if it was true or not...That's gold as far as Mazda trivia goes...Love it! :D

I would totally buy one of those and throw a freaking 3-rotor with a monster port job into it. Think of it along the same lines as people turbo-ing Toyota Cressidas. Instant sleeper.

Back in the 70s, Mazda had a piston engine companion to the RX3. Believe it was called the 303.

Edit

Looked it up, it was the 808.
