Altering, changing, tampering with or "souping up" a motor vehicle for the purpose of racing or speeding on any public road, street or highway in this State shall be considered as aiding, abetting or assisting for the purposes of Sections 56-5-1590 to 56-5-1620.

As a fellow gearhead & former New Yorker,I can tell you you're facing a tough audience in the Police. NY's muffler law is subjective as I recall, meaning if the officer "thinks" it's too loud, it is.

Now - I'm thinking of getting a Corksport CBE, I have a racepipe, I refuse to get a downpipe because of how much louder it makes the car. I don't want the extra attention. Is the CNT quieter? Is the Magnaflow quieter? I simply don't want the attention. Now, if the Corksport is mildly louder, which I think it is, than stock. Sign me up. My Probe has a Borla which is about as loud as I'd ever want an exhaust to be. Little louder than stock on my MS3. Help me out here. I'm getting something. I just don't want it to be obsenely loud.

MS CBE is a lot quiter than stock and helped with a MS CAI to get a little better MPG(32 best) and improved performance a little

It's basically a de-badged Magnaflow. Correct?

I believe you are right on that, however it is much cheaper than the MS CBE by about 200.00 dollars. I have the Magnaflow installed for 2 years now and cannot say enough about how great it sounds. It has more of a deeper tone than most of the ones i have heard and it is not intrusively loud.

Just curious as to why this thread is in the welcome area section rather than in the engines, transmission and drive train section. Seems like it would get a lot more responses there.

But, since I did stumble upon the post, I agree that the Mazdaspeed CBE is a re-badged Magnaflow, and that it is more quiet than the stock CBE. Probably the most quiet one available with good flow.

Another option is what is in my signature. The Vibrant Ultra Quiet reso placed in the middle of my race pipe did a wonderful job of taming the drone from the catless dp/rp combo and knocked the edge off of the extra volume from that setup.

I think that OP will find that adding a straight through reso in his racepipe is a lot cheaper solution and that it would let him rethink that "refuse to get a downpipe" notion. OP, put your money in a downipipe (catted or catless, depending on where you live and what testing requirements may be in place), and enjoy some serious power gains. You can still go with the Magnaflow CBE is you want too.

There are more choices than spending big $$$ on an aftermarket CBE to tame volume. Just add a good straight through reso. The Vibrant Ultra Quiet is about $90 dollars on Amazon, is straight through, has no internal baffles or twists or turns. It's just a huge amount of sound absorbing material wrapped around the straight through pipe with a protective shell around the material. It will not adversely affect power.

If you are not good with basic hand tools and/or want the reso welded in place, rather than just using stainless clamps, a good muffler shop could do the job for you for probably $50 or so.

There is a discussion on this subject going on right now here:

I have seen them on ebay, for that price. I had mine purchased and installed 2 years ago at a local custom exhaust place for 550.00 out the door. It is the fourth time i have purchased a Magnaflow product. It sounds great on this car, has a deeper tone than most. But not loud for the price i highly recommend it. I also have the MSCAI on the car and with both of them together it is a great combo.

So I put in a bid for $450 shipped on Ebay for a Magnaflow and they accepted it! Hooray!

If anyone is looking for a good deal, might be a place to start.

I'd have to hear the GHL in person, but honestly I really don't like the tone. Sounded wicked loud. But I'm happy overall with my purchase.

So I finally put on the Magnaflow... it's... pretty loud. Louder than I was hoping it would be. Does it mellow out a little?

nope it will just get louder as it breaks in...

See this is what confuses me because that's not quiet. Everyone was saying how 'quiet' it was. Well... it's just not. And I really hate getting attention from Police. I'm just nervous. I'm listening to it now through the window of the house. I'm thinking of putting a 3'' resonator on it.

I have had my Magnaflow on for 2 years and it did not get louder. I do not find this to be a loud ehaust at all. I still think it has a nice mellow tone, and i commute to city of Atlanta and do not draw attention. I think it is just your nerves talking, leave it on and drive it for a couple of weeks.

That's the same reason that I sold my Corksport and got the COBB, my buddy did the same and got the Racing beat..I have to say it's the best choice I've made since owning this bugger.

I put the racing beat catback on my turbo xs stealthback exhaust with no cat, and its hands down the most quiet exhaust I have heard. I Had the big chambered muffler hacked off, and a 3" straight through magnaflow welded on, and now it sounds beastly. That big chambered muffler made the car sound close to stock. I like a nice deep gurgly exhaust, and I achieved that. I suggest racing beat catback for your quiet needs.

my question is, if you are so scared of it being loud, why drop $450 on something that will do absolutely nothing for your car? You're better off just changing out the muffler on your OEM exhaust. Magnaflow is far from loud, especially with OEM DP. My setup is Turbo XS DP, Turbo XS Race-pipe with Magnaflow HFC welded in, into a racing beat catback with chambered muffler swapped out, and a magnaflow in its place with 1 resonator on the catback. My car is loud, but its more of a deep kinda loud instead of an obnoxious loud. I live in VA where they are some of the WORSE cops when it comes to car modifications, yet I've never been pulled over once. I love the way my car sounds, its definitely loud, but its tasteful. If I can get by these cops with no harassment, then you can in NY. It sounds loud to you now because you went from OEM to aftermarket, but after you get used to having it on the car, trust me, it will not be that loud. Its just new right now, give it time.

It doesn't do nothing. Especially since there was a pipe within a pipe and a s***-poor weld around the 2nd resonator from when someone hacked it off and re-welded it before selling it. At least I got a RMM and Cobb rear sway bar out of it. I'm not worried about a ticket, that's easy, you just take it to someone to have signed off. I used to do it for people all the time. I guess it would have been nice if the increase in noise was minimal over stock. I'm stuck with it now. I had to cut the stocker. Which I'm OK with. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the sound. I got used to my Borla on my PGT so that was about as loud as I wanted. I'll get used to it... plus... I only have one of the cats on. O_o I'm sure that doesn't help. Heh.
