The PlastiDip Thread

Alright, since there's a bunch of threads about wheels, exhaust, etc. I figured why not start one about plastidip. It seems to be the solution to a lot of problems, an easy fix and a cheap price. Not to mention, if you mess up, you can peel it off and start over.

So this thread is to post pics of the part(s) that you have plastidip'd, or plan on, and to help give people a general idea of what to do.

I guess I'll start off with my mistake (fake "carbon fiber" on my door handles):

^WTF was I thinking?!?

And my solution (black plastidip):

I want to dip my rear valence and my spoiler in black (I have not seen this done yet, would like feedback). The red Audi A3 has a black spoiler, I like that look. I am also thinking of doing my side skirts in black and parts of my front bumper to make it look like it has a DG lip. I also want to gold dip my wheels. Much needed on the red MP5.

EDIT: I think the CF handles would have turned out better if there were not cut lines visible.

i plan on doing my rims and my rear valence in black. i bought 4 cans, just waiting for a nice day off. hard to plan with ohio weather. post pictures of black spoiler? sounds intriguing!

Hkpro5 has a black rear spoiler on his red P5, i have a CF spoiler on mine and many have painted their spoilers black becuase of clear coat failure..

What do you guys do for prep work? Light sanding and/or primer? Or since it's usually meant to be peeled off just a good cleaning before spraying?

I'm going to do my badges black.

My Lower Valence didn't come out so well. I hear doing 1 thick coat while wet is best. I have also done my Mirriors and brezel. I'll have to find some pictures. My spolier looks like crap due to clear coat peeling.

Also my emblems...
I due have one problem, try and keep the wax away from it. I ended up having some areas with white on them due to the wax. /sigh

With my handles and pillars all I did was wiped them down and made sure they were dry, and sprayed it on. I heard that doing it while the weather is warm is the best time to do it. I think all in all, to do all 4 door handles and both of my "A" pillars, it took about 1 1/2 - 2 hours, and most of that time was spent letting the paint dry.

How many coats do you guys use?

I'm very familiar with spray painting, just curious about how the PlastiDip is applied and the outcome and longetevity of it. My friend has his badges blacked out with PlastiDip on his 6 wagon and it looks awesome.

I used 2 coats with no clear coat...I couldn't tell you about longevity wise but this might help...

I plastidipped my center console over 6 months ago and it's still fine. One guy posted awhile back not to plastidip any parts you touch because they won't hold up to the oils in your skin. He did the center console, the handles, the radio surround. They where shiny and pitted. I have a feeling he was a level 99 greasy Italian.

Can you spray paint plastidip? I've been considering plastidip ing my hood the spraying it with the chalkboard stuff so I can have the chalk board hood and peel it off when I get board with it

yes you can, but you'll probably want to thin it down. if you watch the videos from dipyourcar.com the guy adds thinner to the can of plastidip and then pours it into an electric spray gun.

Make sure you run white chalk long ways across the whole board first then erase it off to "condition" it
Awesomeness will ensue... Everyone had a blast at my meet last night writing on it for my trip today.
I chose to do this to my hood simply because I had a show this weekend and it was a cheap temporary fix that was fun and quirky...that kinda sums up my car and I.
If you have any more questions feel free to PM me or stop by mah thread! (link below)
Happy dipping sir!
