What width wheel would you use a 165-45-15 on? 5.5 or 6? It blows me away that a tire shop would even mount a combo like that.

If it was a classic style tire tread, I would say that I've seen them. My 2002 has 165's on it, but 13" wheels. My Mk1 Rabbit had 175's on it. Older British cars had 165-175 on them. But no, that's definitely a trend-following company.

car came with a 235/45/18 tire, he's running a 225x35x18 that's most the gap issue. Runnin lo-pros brah!

I see those aftermarket fender flares that look like they bolt on for when your tire is way too wide... that guy could start a trend of reverse fender flares- they go on the inside of the wheel well to get rid of your front/back of the wheel wheel gap.

Oh, i think the way-smaller-than-OE tire is "slammed on a budget"
