'90 - '97 proteges can enter as long as you have a 100% stock car, they're on the approved list. Phen's is a '02, with his mileage the car is going for around $2K, maybe less depending on the condition. The car could enter, but it would be 100+ laps down after passing tech. It could still have a chance of finishing in a decent position, but a different car might have a better chance

Yeah... after actually looking at it, you probably wouldn't have been able to get any of the bits off. Plus, I didn't realize just how badly ****** the car really was at the time. After finally getting a chance to see it, definitely questionable regarding roadworthiness.
before that happens, do you have an unmolested driver's side a-pillar interior peice?
...you'd want to road race a bunch of $500 crap can with generally inexperienced racers IN a $500 crap-can...without a firesuit, helmet, roll cage, fireproof underwear, etc? Jumping off a bridge is a whole lot cheaper and about as safe (rlaugh)
sounds better than 4 small holes and one giant one froma gauge pod

just how bad is it? i'd expect the car to last for a while and be easy to fix if someting brakes on track

would you be bringing it back or scraping it near your parent's place? I'd like to take a look at it, might have to enter it on the EC (over $500\somewhat modded) class instead of trying to justify the $500 worth
If I scrap it, it's staying out there. It'll go to the recycling yard that my dad takes all his metal to. It's not worth dragging it an hour from their house unless I know for sure it's going somewhere. Gas is too expensive for that. Keep in mind, there are only 3 weeks left to do something with it before I'm gone and can't do anything about it. At that point, it will be junkyard fodder.

ok, then a few questions will help, mostly how rusty it is and how that would affect maintenance for:
- shocks
- brakes
- sway bars (will they stay in place as long as I don't touch them?)
- how's the tranny holding up? clutch, power steering, drive shafts, bearings
- is it leaking anything?

Just to be clear, Peaches, when I volunteered to help working on the Chumpcar I didn't mean I wanted it sitting at our house for a year. (Not trying to sound like a chump myself, just saying). As long as it can drive to the house and leave that same day, I'm fine with working on it at our house. And I don't plan on driving/spending money, just helping out with a place to wrench and my tools/limited knowledge. 
ps- Phen, I'll give you a couple buck for the glove box door and gauge cluster face (mine are both scratched up) if you wouldn't mind snagging them. Or I can follow you out there and pull them myself.

I think your estimate is spot on. Probably more like 500-600 for tires if you want sticky street tires. (Most chump car orgs have min treadwear reqs). Seat and harness will dock you about $600 if you want it to be new and SFI/FIA certified. But I think you can get by way cheaper going used. I bet all said you could get the car "race ready" for 5-6k including the purchase price. They aren't strict about expiration dates on seats and harnesses like a regular racing organization. So you could use an expire seat and harness most likely.
I believe you are allowed to have a radio to talk to the driver. You could pick up a starter radio package for $500 like this: http://www.saferacer.com/sampson-ra...cing-radio-starter-package.html?productid=573 or once again pick up a used one for less (I watch the SCCA/NASA classifieds on a weekly basis).
As far as personal safety gear... Helmet, Full Suit, Underwear, Gloves, and Shoes all SFI rated. If you buy everything new is going to run you minimum of $1k.

If this is the car that will be used as a ChumpCar I have ample room to store it at my place.
25 hours at Nelson Ledges is crazy...that track just beats you up. I've done 40 minutes straight there before and was super tired so I would imagine that it would be a good idea to get as many drivers as possible in on this. Plus that lessens the overall cost of the project.
