The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Ivan, is your year the model with the bad turbos? Can you swap it out with an OEM revised one? Of course, I'd say go big or go home as well. But you're probably not allowed to soooo... (whistle)

figured you would.

Lol if I had the stock parts and the time, I would consider it. I don't know if I would even still be covered with close to 80,000 miles.

I'd have it ported and rebuilt with an upgraded compressor wheel...

I would do that if that was the plan right now. Upgraded turbo means Cobb AP which is 200 more than my Hypertech. Upgraded turbo = 800 minimum. Add to that a solid week of tuning. That's not something I want to take on right now. Next year I will possibly go with an upgraded turbo. The BNR stage 3 turbo will be plenty. I don't want much more power. I simply want reliability.

It is not. I have one of the revised turbos. They all end up going at some point. Brand new is minimum 500 bucks if you can find a good deal. At this point I will buy Jake's for $100 and hope that it runs well until next year. At that point I will upgrade to something like the BNR and Cobb AP.

I can't believe my turbo has takin a s*** yet (knock on my hollow head) 125k on a stock MSP GT25 woohoo! Hopefully I can grap those parts from Nate thiss weekend and get the motor the following weekend from Evan and let the fun begin. Question is how do you break in a motor with 200k+ on it and boost it. I think either way it will pop within a couple events, but how long should I take it easy on it before I take it to an event? I can't wait to take mine in and have it bored over and let the fun begin.

Just switch to the higher viscosity oil and watch your oil levels. No sense in replacing it only to go again a few months later, unless its completely dumping the smoke like a diesel

Why do you need to break in a motor that's already running, silly pants? It hasn't been sitting or anything. Like Thomas said, maybe run some thicker oil and run it while you're building your motor. Honestly, I'll be a little sad when it pops because for an FS-DE to have almost a quarter million miles is an achievement from the previous owner, and all on the same clutch! Haha. I'm looking forward to pulling it and sending it over to you though. :)

Ps- if anyone wants to come over and hang out, BS and lend a hand with pulling the motor, let me know. I'll ask Tessa to make a yummy dinner as a thank you.

Doesn't Mazda have a longer warranty on the turbos since every one of them was going bad?

i wouldnt upgrade the internals on a k04, i know a couple of ms3 guys that popped motors doing that... and they were tuned

sorry to hear the turbo is going Ivan, good luck replacing it. Do you have one already? if not ill keep my eyes open on forums for ya

Not quite sure but now that I think about it, I don't deserve a new turbo from Mazda. If the car was bone stock and the turbo was now smoking, I would. I don't want to contribute to that whole mentality.

Thanks Levi, I appreciate it. Jake already offered his turbo up to me for a great price. Can you give me a bit more info on people popping motors due to upgraded k04s? I'm interested to hear why.

Everything is ready for you.

I'm at 70,300 on stock turbo but a I looked at it while taking off the lower tie bar and looks like there might be some oil leaking :(

And it looks like my rebuild hit another costly snag. Going to have to bore 20 thousandths over, and buy pistons.

I just didn't know about adding boost to it, but I really didn't think it would matter because either way the turbo is going to but it under more work no matter what and it isn't like I can just boost to 3psi then let off evey time. What day do you plan on pulling that out again? If I'm off I'll come over and lend a hand. I didn't know if you had a 32mm axle socket nut or a tie rod end spreader.

Sweet. So far it is a go for us to go to the cookout so it looks like it is going to be a great weekend again.

Hey Nate, I wanted to get those springs from you at the cookout so if you can fit them into your car as well that would be awesome.

Breaking in the turbo is a good thing tho.

I have those in the trunk already for you.

Ok so we still have time to donate. I looked at the MS site for the Pedal to the Point ride that Chippy is doing, near as I can see that is on Aug 3-4. Which is the same weekend that Jenny is doing the Susan G. Komen 3-day walk in Cleveland (60 miles in 3 days).
